#ResistanceRoots Today in history, 1930: A white mob of thousands abducts, brutally beats and lynch two young African American men, Thomas Shipp and Abram Smith. This horrific event of racial terror became the catalyst for a multigenerational saga of activism, healing and artistic controversy. /1

Infamous photo of the lynching of Shipp and Smith taken by local studio photographer Lawrence Beitler. It shows the battered bodies hanging from the tree, surrounded by a crowd of white onlookers who were smiling and pointing. (I cropped out the bodies to avoid a Graphic Image label. It’s easy to find online if you want to see it.) Beitler sold thousands of copies of the print. Photos and postcards of lynchings were produced, traded and collected as souvenirs by white crowds well into the 20th century. These gruesome images served as celebratory mementos of white supremacy and were mailed openly through the U.S. postal system until restrictions tightened.

I was 17 in 1990 visiting San Diego for the summer. Went to a drag bar called #1 on 5th in Hillcrest with my drag boyfriend. Went to Topsy’s for food after. A woman with a bad wig walked in, and Chad Michaels (Cher) yelled “WIG!!!” That’s what I hear in my head when I see recent Trump pictures.
