On another site I follow a Hedgehog rescue and they have put out a plea for us to put out shallow dishes of water for hedgehogs. You may not even be aware that 🦔 are visiting. It’s so easy to do and it can save a life. I know many of you already do so please share post spread the word. #GardenStuff

So for the last day of Pollinator week I would like to thank everyone for staying with me. I thought today I would offer a list of useful online resources. It’s difficult when folks are geographically distant to give lists of plants so I have kept it general. #GardenStuff

The help for pollinator posts today are some ideas from the internet for bug shelters. Made from whatever you have to hand they might be an activity to do with children. The structures can be filled with pine cones, shredded paper, straw, broken pot, sticks lengths of bamboo, leaves. #GardenStuff

Hoverflies are garden friends in two ways. They are just behind bees as pollinators and at the larval stage are a prodigious consumer of aphids. They are also in decline from habitat loss, pesticides and climate change. 1 #GardenStuff

The piece today might be a little controversial so for anyone growing I completely appreciate that this may not be useful for you. Globally there has been a significant decrease in butterfly and moth numbers the major causes are habitat loss, climate change and pesticide use. #GardenStuff

As we are currently in a heatwave (UK) it seemed appropriate to talk about bees and water. Bees consume their body weight in water a day. Dedicated forager 🐝 scout for water to take back to the hive. In hot weather a hive can require up to 2 litres of water a day. 🧵 1 #GardenStuff

A pollinator is simply a vector that moves pollen from one flower to another. The main types are Insects birds and animals. Grains and rice crops are wind pollinated but the nutrient dense parts of our diet - fruits vegetables are 75% the product of pollinators #GardenStuff

What's flowering in the garden in June Geranium and Erigeron in a small planter, foxglove & lovely Shasta daisies attracting a variety of insects. Hedge bedstraw also our cat having a snoozy Sunday afternoon

For the first time since we moved to this house (some 40 summers) there have been no returning swifts. No swooping birds nesting in our neighbours eaves. They have been getting fewer every year. It feels very sad #gardenstuff

The house is a corner plot so we have in essence three gardens. This is the 'side' garden. It is the wildest bit it has a garden pond and lots of cover for the invertebrates. This is the view towards the road that runs by our house. #gardenstuff

Two rose bushes looking super in the 🌞 today and the scent of them on the breeze is lovely. The pink one is next to the front door and is about 5 or 6 years old the white one in a bed opposite the front door and is probably 30 years old. #gardenstuff

For today's tip I would like to talk water. In addition to water butts we also have several watertight receptacles dotted around the garden (especially near pots) to collect rainwater. Dip tanks and an old measuring jug are so handy while you are weeding / dead heading you can water 1 #gardenstuff

Today's gardening tip: make your own strawberry tower out of different sized pots. A cane through the centre helps to keep the structure stable ( I always pop something on top of the cane to prevent any unfortunate mishaps.) It's a good way to maximise space. #gardenstuff
