This week Becky and I brave the Goat of Mendes as we look at one of Hammer's best (opinions differ here on just how great it is), The Devil Rides Out (1968). Find it in all the usual places and at www.evolutionofhorror.com/hammer.
We're doing it again on 6 August at 19.30 here, for Gareth's fine new novel To Those From Below: www.facebook.com/WriteBlend/p... Come if you can!

ICYMI the latest episode of Hammer Time sees Kev and me having a fun and fascinating chat with Hammer historian Marcus Hearn all about the inimitable Jimmy Sangster. OUT NOW 🎧 Part of @evolutionofhorror.bsky.social
One year older. One year closer to being one of those rheumy-eyed old men sat alone in badly-lit pubs, staring into space silently, every single second of regret crosshatched across their ruined face like spiderweb on driftwood.
This week, Becky and I take a look at one of Hammer's very best, the brilliant Quatermass and the Pit (1967). Available in all the usual podcast places and, as usual, at www.evolutionofhorror.com/hammer
Cities in flames! World panic spreads! This week on HAMMER TIME, Kev and Becky are digging beneath the streets of London and uncovering ancient Martian secrets as they discuss Nigel Kneale's classic sci-fi horror QUATERMASS AND THE PIT from 1967. OUT NOW!
If you don't fancy listening to the Hammer Time podcast (if not, what's wrong with you??!), here are some written thoughts of Quatermass and the Pit (1967) you might like instead... eofftvreview.wordpress.com/2026/07/22/q...
Quatermass and the Pit (1967)
Quatermass and the Pit, first broadcast by the BBC between 22 December 1958 and 26 January 1959 was Nigel Kneale’s most ambitious serial to date and had been on Hammer’s radar since as early as 196…

We're going back to Egypt on Hammer Time this week (don't worry, it's better than our last trip there...) as we, to quote the posters, "beware the beat of the cloth-wrapped feet!" with The Mummy's Shroud (1967). Listen at all good podcast outlets and here: www.evolutionofhorror.com/hammer
As promised to link to my first actual Hookland book. It is only small, but covers a lot of the ghost soil. If enough of you buy it and like it there will be a Volume Two. www.amazon.co.uk/dp/1068598123 It will also be available in an actual bookshop soon.
Me and Becky are back with the Baron in this week's Hammer Time. Will we find more common ground this time? Maybe... maybe not... Available where you get all your podcasts and here: www.evolutionofhorror.com/hammer
Here’s the link to last week’s BBC radio interview: www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/... In two parts, my segments are time stamped at 41mins and 1hr 8mins. I chat all things ‘To Those from Below’, getting signed by the wonderful @losbennett.bsky.social and writing the weird in general. Hope you enjoy it!

This afternoon’s film. A huge favourite of mine. A genuinely frightening folk horror (it DEFINITELY is FH), and a film which manages to make me feel drunk as fuck, even when i’m sober.
On the new episode of HAMMER TIME, out today, Kev and I chat (and largely disagree) about the BRILLIANT The Witches from 1966! 😏 Please tell me what you think of this one! OUT NOW Part of @evolutionofhorror.bsky.social
Fifth round of chemo in the bag for my little ichiban. The love he continues to show, the happiness he finds, the joy he infects everyone and everything with, all whilst he’s going through such a rough time… he is and always will be the ultimate fucking masterpiece.
Had a cracking time being interviewed about the new book on BBC radio yesterday. Show hits soon and i’ll drop the links here. Also, my copies of ‘To Those from Below’ arrived just afterwards so, all told, it was a very tidy writer day, despite the nuclear heat.
FolknHell checks into Hokum. Remote Irish inn, locked honeymoon suite, witchcraft, and a chalk circle that really needed finishing It's scary. One of us screamed But does it hold up to a second viewing? Is it even #folkhorror ? New episode 👇 https://www.folknhell.com/hokum-review
Really looking forward to this week’s episode @bunnydarke.bsky.social and @eofftv.bsky.social … because i absolutely hate Hammer’s ‘The Old Dark House’! A risible mess that’s so bad it almost made me permanently pissed off with William Castle. Is there a ‘lower lower LOWER’ category?!
Stoked to have been invited back into the studio to chat about to new book etc. Looking forward to it, will post the link when the show’s live. And remember, ‘To Those from Below’ is now out EVERYWHERE, including… www.waterstones.com/book/to-thos... www.foyles.co.uk/book/to-thos...
All power to the staff at Cherry Reds. I was there on Saturday having a typically wicked brekkie and pint when those Britain First wankers were milling about everywhere, being generally cunty and gross. They did the right thing refusing to serve that clown. Hope to see more places drawing a line.
Another day, another far-right nasty being refused service in a Birmingham bar on Saturday for being associated with the Britain First rally + going online to incite harassment of them, hatebombing reviews etc Do hope Reform UK's George Ikin gets prosecuted. Still, mark Cherry Reds as fash-free ⭐
Becky and I are on our Hammer travels again, this time returning to Cornwall and shedding our skins along the way, just like the star of The Reptile (1966). I'm sure you know where to find us by now...
Flat landscapes. Ancient bogs. A family curse stretching back further than memory. Moloch (2022) is European #folkhorror at its most elemental. Slow, damp & deeply unsettling Listen to the FolknHell podcast: https://link.content360.io/fhml #horror #moviereview #bogbodies
OUT TODAY! ‘To Those from Below’! Very proud of this one, and i hope you love it! (old timer dawg not included) Available, everywhere, including: Waterstones www.waterstones.com/book/to-thos... Foyles www.foyles.co.uk/book/to-thos... World of Books www.worldofbooks.com/en-gb/produc...
Finishing touches to the latest novel, ‘The Midnight District.’ The second novel completed in 2026, about to get cracking on the third. ‘…like heart-attacks in my head.’
