Maybe the other big factor is that he was a ready-made "cult" figure: signed for peanuts from relative obscurity, big smile, infectiously upbeat personality, no apparent ego, and with a (to be generous) catchily taboo chant about him. All helped him be forgiven quickly for summer 2023's agitation.
