Pavel Iosad@anghyflawn.net · 3d agoSame thing in HE. Moving the transfer of content from one brain to the other was a lot of work to move online, but basically not a great loss. What people really missed about in-person was the social aspect. Not like we hadn’t known this, but it was a very stark demonstration.
Labour should do some self-reflection and use the same analysis on their new idea of bringing back education to 14 they do on a classics degree at a poly: who are the employers who want that? Realistically the answer is not advanced manufacturing but more like vape shops and county lines.

Yes, you're going to get a NEETs issue. That's pretty basic economics.

A pro-consumer idea that is common elsewhere in the world would be to make the listed price include tax and the default tip.

This is just wrong, both conceptually (council tax and stamp duty distort the market, so dumping them is not facially ridiculous) and in practice (property tax works perfectly well in the US, so it’s workable).

It would've come home, but it had heard about the uncertainties around settled status and ILR at the moment and decided to check out other options.
The solution is to combine the LVT with regionalism and hypothecate it back to the local area. The model lets you do this, and then this problem goes away.

There is this weird fact about "market rate" housing, which is that the price is the way it is because a lot of people are willing to pay it. Almost by definition, it can't be true that every house is unaffordable to every buyer.
James Ball@jamesrball.com · 4w agoThere are still a lot of places in London where you can buy a genuinely decent two bedroom flat *inside zone two* for under £400k. Like, affordability is awful, we are in a housing crisis, and it all needs tackling. But people's sense of it might be a little out of proportion.
If Labour doesn’t at least unwind its huge tax rises on Unis, what will happen is a messy collapse in the middle part of what @igmansfield.bsky.social’s white paper called “global universities”.

Stephen Bush@stephenkb.bsky.social · last mo.This is I think something which should be a bigger part of the UK’s growth strategy: there must be some stretches of beachfront which until recently had lovely beach, bad weather, that for comparatively little money could be holiday homes for richer European countries, like Poland or wherever.
This is correct in the sense that if you liked what he said in the election campaign and voted for him, you’d be upset, since he didn’t really do those things. As he didn’t have a huge vote buffer (the majority is from efficiency), the collapse was fast and severe.

There is something eerily similar to Kamala Harris taking over about the current political moment in England. Kier Starmer’s incapability has been recognized and acted on, generating relief and optimism. But the person being slotted in hasn’t described a clean break from failure either.
I hope deploying AC more broadly in England is part of the plan.

There's also the policy failures that started with the first budget, which lead to historically poor electoral results almost right away. Looking back, it seems bold to have pursued a program almost designed to annoy most of the people who liked your manifesto and voted for you.

It’s completely fine. The questions are mostly nice, and I don’t see where the rule that questions shouldn’t be cumulative comes from. It certainly doesn’t exist at Uni level. If you can’t do “part a” then you are weak on the ILO.

This is empirically correct. Mindlessly opposing Trump and also mindlessly voting Dem in federal elections back tests really well. You literally never have to “hand it to Trump for accelerating the fall of capitalism” or any other derpy thing. Everything he does is bad and fails.
