Always good to keep in mind that it does not matter how the fire starts. Fires start all the time, but what really matters is the high heat and low humidity to dry out fuels causing the fire to spread rapidly. And these conditions are increasing every year with anthropogenic climate change.

It’s always fascinating to find whole valves of marine specimens in till - a relatively common occurrence in the HBL. I’m sure this Macoma calcarea has had quite the ride. Glaciers are often perceived as these ‘grinding’ machines, but on a soft substrate this is less true.

Yes, we get a lot of “is this a meteorite?” inquiries at the survey. Most often, the rocks are obviously not meteorites. However today someone strolled in with this material. This is by far the densest material that I have ever held. It puts a typical VMS Ni-Cu ore to shame. Anyone?

This also surprised me quite a bit. Was observed all over the area to some degree. May need a ‘wildfire’ parameter on your Boreal cosmo ages! Hah
Fire-induced rock spalling! This area burnt about 1-2 months ago. All of the little rock shards on the ground are spalled pieces of the granite boulder, overlying burnt soil and moss. Before seeing this in person, I didn't really consider the mechanical weathering effects of fire!

July was the smokiest month on record in Winnipeg with 189 hours of smoke at the Airport. Temperatures were average, but it was much drier than normal. It was also the driest January to July on record at the Airport with 126mm of precip. Normal is close to 300mm
