We develop fundamentals for climate change adaptation.

Fresh off the press: KryoMon.AT Report Nr. 2 is out. ❄️ The new KryoMon.AT report (2022/23 & 2023/24) pulls together the national picture on glaciers, snow, lake ice – and permafrost, where GEORESEARCH contributed long-term borehole data from our Open-Air-Lab Kitzsteinhorn.

The new KryoMon.AT report is published.

Permafrost knowledge. Infrastructure resilience. 💡Our Interreg project FROST.INI (2025–2027) has a clear objective: strengthening resilience to the impacts and risks of permafrost degradation in the Austrian–Italian Alps. A key step towards this goal is the close integration of stakeholders.

Validating UAV-based GPR measurements of glacier ice thickness 🎯🧊 Over the past year, we have been mapping glacier ice thickness across Austria using novel UAV-based Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) (by SPH Engineering).

From a summer storm to 2 million m³ of shifting debris. ⛈️ The #Sattelkar is a striking example of how our changing climate reshapes high-alpine terrain. Our 2025 interim #research report provides fresh data on this 19-hectare active landslide system and its evolving dynamics.

Mid-term Partner Meeting of the Interreg EU project FROST.INI – Salzburg We had a great mid-term FROST.INI partner meeting in Salzburg, with representatives from all partners - OGS, Institute for Earth Observation – Eurac Research, Land Salzburg, and Provincia Autonoma di Bolzano – Land Südtirol.

📡 Autonomous UAS operations for climate impact research in high alpine regions This autumn, GEORESEARCH received official BVLOS (Beyond Visual Line of Sight) approval from Austro Control for operating unmanned aerial systems (UAS) from hangar-based systems in two high alpine regions.

Last Thursday – just a few hours before a cold front brought 20 cm of fresh snow – our team climbed into the remote, hard-to-access #Sattelkar cirque (Obersulzbachtal, Hohe Tauern National Park) to collect water-isotope samples and retrieve ground-temperature sensor data.

How much ice is left in one of Salzburg's largest glaciers? 🧊 Last week, our team conducted fieldwork at Venedigerkees — one of the largest glaciers in Salzburg — to obtain high-resolution surface models and to measure its ice thickness.
