Well, a vole (probably?) decided to steal one of our pitfall traps 😅 has this happened to anyone else?

Ecologist. Postdoctoral researcher at @unibern on climate extremes, stability and soil communities. First recorded in Catalunya. Recently spotted in CH.
Four years ago, we asked where and when do heatwaves cause stronger ecological impacts. Now we know that lowland communities are more perturbed, and that their recovery is greater in spring than in summer! Check it out in our recent Ecology Letters paper 😉 onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/...

Europe’s record heatwave: does the continent have a new climate?
Nature asks researchers whether scorching summers are the new norm for London, Paris and Berlin.

Our first study from the Hasli Outdoor Mesocosm Experiment (HOME) is out!! Here we focus on plant responses to extreme heat and drought during the first two years of the experiment, and we found that fast- and slow-growing plants fully recovered to drought onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/...
Convergent Post‐Drought Recovery of Biomass and Functional Traits Under Constant and Periodic Warming in Slow‐ and Fast‐Growing Plants
In a 2-year outdoor mesocosm experiment, slow- and fast-growing grassland plants exhibit biomass-trait decoupling 1 month after drought, particularly under warmed conditions. This decoupling disappea....

Inoculating fungi and bacteria in our microcosms 🦠 today it's the turn of springtails ✌🏻
Massive week starting our new soil microcosm experiment 🤘🏻 still lots of work to do, but looks pretty cool so far, right? 😉
Such a great time at #OikosFin2025! Amazing program, super nice people and beautiful location 🙌🏻 I even received a very enthuastic award! 🤪
‼️Now published in @esajournals.bsky.social A 40-year demographic assessment of the decline and recovery of the flagship Catalan Bonelli's eagle population. Also, exciting insights about its interaction with nearby populations! #ornithology #ecology #raptors 👇 onlinelibrary.wiley.com/share/author...
Getting ready for the Oikos conference here in Jyväskylä 👌🏻 found some well-spent time for outdoor activities
Preprint out!! 🌡️🌐 This has been a huge project, and I'm extremely happy to finally share it! If you are into climate extremes, soil biodiversity, elevational gradients and seasonality, take a look and feel free to reach out 😉 doi.org/10.32942/X22...
Belowground communities in lowlands are less stable to climate extremes across seasons

Just received a rejected manuscript, but glad that we got very constructive and thorough reviews. Unfortunately this is not always the case, so kudos to the reviewers for the great work!!
Me during today's bird transect: how many starlings should I count? 😵💫 Avui durant SOCC de la falda del Port, a comptar estornells 🤪 @icornitologia.bsky.social
As a present to myself for my 30th birthday, I finally managed to finish the biggest paper I've written so far! So excited to share this, preprint coming soon 😊
Fourth winter season counting birds in my hometown to finish off the year ✌🏻 Here one of the highlights, just spotted the peregrine falcon along with a group of griffon vultures. @elisendaperis.bsky.social
A remark from a referee ~40 yr back prompted this study. I launched it under the (later seen) wrong premise that it would last ~15 yr. But my marked plants lived much longer than anticipated, and it took me 38 yr to complete it. Here are the results. I defeated my plants in the race for survival.
Frozen shoots of Solidago canadensis in our experimental mesocoms 🥶 Any reason why this species is particularly impacted by frost? Any fitness consequences? (more vulnerable to pathogen infection? 🤔)
Designing experiments has to be one of the best tasks ever 👌🏻 Although this one is getting a bit out of hands 😬
What is a species "shadow distribution"? This infographic helps communicate "shadow distributions" with stakeholders and environmental managers. We used species distribution models to quantify this conservation concept for Swiss fishes. 🌐🌎 #macroecology www.nature.com/articles/s41...
Group leaders! The uptake of this paper suggests to me that folk aren’t talking enough about experimental design with their students? Has experimental design fallen off the syllabus? Is a sense of experimental design like a sense of humour? Everyone thinks they have a good one but….?
I wrote (ranted) on experimental design as I was frustrated as an editor at how little guidance students were getting. I underestimated the interest in the issue: it has been downloaded 10,000+ times! Clearly it’s something we need to be talking about more. onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10....
Some of our recent research, this time focusing on interactions among soil organisms 😉 How will climate change affect the feeding biology of Collembola? www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...
Here is a starter pack for #ExperimentalEcology ! I am surprised that my list is very short. Let’s grow it 🕸️ go.bsky.app/FNJ38h
Want to learn more about the wonderful world of soil biodiversity? Well then here's the starter pack for you! If I've accidentally missed anyone off the list then please let me know in the comments. Also check out @msteinwandter.bsky.social who has been working on one too! go.bsky.app/UxXTyxD
A starter pack for people studying how human affect biodiversity and ecosystem functioning at global scale, across terrestrial and marine realms & conservation challenges. Sounds like Global Ecology ! sure I missed many people, reply to be added, and share to spread ! go.bsky.app/V6tN4cv 🧪🌍🦤🦑🪴
Our review paper on heat-induced ecological debts is published in this month's issue of TREE. It was a real achievement to put this together, I hope you enjoy it, and hopefully this inspires more research on heat extremes and ecological stability! 💪 www.cell.com/trends/ecolo...
Ecological debts induced by heat extremes
Heat extremes have become the new norm in the Anthropocene. Their potential to trigger major ecological responses is widely acknowledged, but their unprecedented severity hinders our ability to predic...
