With the benefit of yet another used bookstore find, I’m back to Kant (again) Originally published 1923, my hardcover reprinted 1963 Humanities Press.

Perry@lollardfish.bsky.social · 5d agoother good responses here, but I'll say - my experience is that academics want movies that somehow feel "true" to their expertise (Name of the Rose, for me) or are so obviously self-aware preposterous (A Knight's Tale) that we can have fun. O Brother is the latter.
Just quick If I were to read only one Odyssey at this point, it would be Daniel Mendelsohn's newly published version, which I read when it came out last year. The rhythm of the prose got me all the way through.

Outstanding interdisciplinary contribution based in medieval studies, many insights on religion & race. Core is careful comparison btwn Spanish Christian Teresa de Jesus & Moroccan Sufi Sidi Ridwan. My March trip to Spain added knowledge of the Iberian Peninsula, adding some context to my reading.
Concise, yet highly detailed, examination of archaeological evidence for women’s leadership in Early Christianity. There’s a lot. Clearly written and an excellent corrective to lots of popular discourse/ theology.

My first Odyssey was written by “Lawrence of Arabia” and published under the name T.E. Shaw, originally published 1932. I found a worn hardcover years ago in a used bookstore, $3 according to the pencil mark on the inside cover, and the prose drew me in. Finished that one pretty quickly.
Among White Americans, the further right they placed Jesus, the more solidarity they report with other White Americans. Among Black Americans, the relationship runs the other direction. The two lines do not just move in opposite directions: one group gains a racial self, while the other loses one.👇
