A neighborly way to give and receive, freely, built on the AT Protocol. gifthood.org gifthood.community

Some good news: the team at @bsky.app just awarded Gifthood a $2,000 AT Protocol grant. Thank you, sincerely. It means a lot that the people building the open network believe in what we're trying to do to build stronger connections among neighbors.

New on Gifthood: turn on email under Notification settings, and we’ll let you know when someone raises a hand on your listing, when you get a message you haven’t seen yet, or when you receive a daily digest of new nearby listings. gifthood.org/releases/2.3...

I have received a Gifthood member report that desktop push notifications are not working in the Brave browser. This is a Brave browser privacy feature. If you would like to receive push notifications, you have to turn on "Use Google services for push messaging" under Privacy and security.

Brave Browser's "Privacy and security" settings page. A magenta arrow and text reading "This needs to be toggled on" point to the "Use Google services for push messaging" option, which is currently switched off.

I just added a little bit more privacy shielding. You can now elect to have your content not show up on the public-facing surfaces. Only logged-in users will be able to see your profile and listings.

A privacy setting card under a 'PRIVACY' section heading. The setting is titled 'Discourage apps from showing my account to logged-out users,' with description text reading: 'gifthood won't show your profile, listings, hands, or notes to visitors who aren't signed in. Other apps may not honor this request. This does not make your account private.' A toggle switch on the right is in the off position.

Good morning. Notifications have gotten a bit of a sprucing up, as we say around here 🌲. You now have fine-grained control over what the app may bug you with and what should go unnotified. Find it under Settings → Notification Settings

Gifthood.community notification settings page. A 'Notify me on this device' toggle is off, while a master 'Allow notifications' toggle is on. Below it, individual toggles for Messages, Interest in your listings, New followers, Notes on your listings, Exchange updates, and New listings nearby are all on. A distance selector for nearby listings is set to 'Same as my feed (within ~5 km),' with options for ~1.2 km and ~5 km.

Today was deployment hardening day. Which, incidentally, also now automatically unlocks direct messaging (we encrypt messages at rest) whenever the server or hypervisor reboots. messaging: UNLOCKED — last unlock 2026-07-11T18:29:14.324Z (source: kms). 🥳

Congratulations to @brittanyellich.com on her first month at Bluesky. Gifthood is actively (as time allows) participating in Atmospheric Groups on Atproto, as I feel this will be an important aspect for many future participants in a healthy mutual aid platform that Gifthood strives to become.

Hello! I've been at Bluesky for a bit over a month now and have a lot of thoughts, which are now going to be tucked away in this cute lil blog on @pckt.blog First up: Atmospheric Groups, an effort that we are working on in the Atmosphere community that I'm very excited about 👀👀

My friends from @newpublic.org are opening their doors to Roundabout Southeast Portland next Tuesday, July 14th. Roundabout is a new online community for SE. I have had the opportunity to get a sneak peek. It's already looking very nice and will be great for our community. Sign up for the waitlist:

Roundabout is a new online community for people in Southeast Portland. Events calendar, ask for recommendations, learn more about our community, and share what you know in our local's guides.

You can now delete your account yourself. Profile → Danger zone → Delete account walks you through exactly what gets removed (your listings and conversations — everywhere, not just here) and what we keep (moderation records, invites you gave out).

A little update on how things are moving along. We now have 55 humans in the community, with 11 active offers and 6 posted requests. 35 additional humans have been invited to join the community.

You know, it's a funny thing. My neighbor has a ladder. I need a ladder maybe twice a year. So what did I do? I bought a ladder. Now there are two ladders sitting in two garages, doing nothing, forty feet apart.
