I just read Sapolsky's book Determined and it kind of blew my mind. There's a biological argument for unconditional basic income to be made based on how our decisions depend on factors beyond our control. If free will is an illusion, then we should make sure to end poverty and reduce chronic stress.

It's great to see UBI with strong 59% majority support, but I don't think we should only be looking at policies from the perspective of protecting against unemployment impacts. You can keep your job but earn less. And everyone who isn't displaced by AI should still benefit because we all trained AI.

I think the best possible new tax to implement alongside universal basic income is a land value tax because it would also solve the landlord problem and make housing more affordable. In the US, this UBI layer should be implemented locally and exist in addition to other layers alongside other taxes.
