1: Happy to have received two copies of the new edited book Workflow Systems for Large-Scale Scientific Data Analysis, to which we contributed two chapters. 📘📘 A brief summary of our contributions follows. 🧵

Two copies of the edited book "Workflow Systems for Large-Scale Scientific Data Analysis", https://depositonce.tu-berlin.de/items/7f0a2d1f-bb60-4009-890c-9f117cfd27da, with its colorful cover, photographed in front of my office window, with green trees and Glasgow tenement rows in the background.

4: Kathleen will be presenting a short paper on Carbon-Aware Workflow Execution, arxiv.org/abs/2503.13705. This will be Kathleen's first talk at a conference and we are actively working on extending our results in the EPSRC-funded project Casper, so you are most welcome to provide helpful feedback!

Exploring the Potential of Carbon-Aware Execution for Scientific Workflows

Scientific workflows are widely used to automate scientific data analysis and often involve processing large quantities of data on compute clusters. As such, their execution tends to be long-running a...

PROPL, the workshop that inspired us to organize LOCO, is back! This time it'll take place with both ICFP and SPLASH. Have a look at the website if programming/computing as a force for good is something you care about! 💻🌍🌱📄👇

Programming for the Planet@propl.dev · last yr.

The 2nd Programming for the Planet workshop will be hybrid and co-located with ICFP/SPLASH in October in Singapore! Our call for papers is out at conf.researchr.org/home/icfp-sp..., submission deadline 3rd July 2025.

It’s been two weeks since we held the 1st International Workshop on Low-Carbon Computing (LOCO), and I'm still buzzing. It was so good to see this community come together, hear about all the interesting ideas and early results, and witness how many care deeply about computer system sustainability! 🧵

A collage out of five photos from the day:
- In the center is a photo of a LOCO 2024 poster.
- In the top left is Kathleen West presenting her paper.
- In the bottom left is Andres La Riva moderating the keynote chat.
- In the bottom right is a photo of a live demo on carbon-aware networking that Ryan Gibb gave.
- In the top right is me during the opening remarks.

Only three more days to apply to join us as a (PD)RA on the EPSRC-funded #Casper project. Together with our partners at HU Berlin, AWS, and the BBC, we will be researching how the execution of scalable batch processing applications can be aligned with the availability of low-carbon energy! ☁️💻🌱
