Pretty sure it was Doom 3, so survival is off the table immediately; but what would $250m even do at this point for a dying planet. It's a drop in the ocean compared to what's needed in terms of resources. And soon everyone will start realizing just how much money, as a concept, is fiction anyway.

You're offered $250,000,000 but to claim it you must enter the last video game you've played and stay there for a full year. How are y'all faring in this deal?

Every single one of these experts think in 20th century's terms. And maybe that's what everyone watching them is really looking for. It's just a form of therapy. I've seen 20 years of this messaging, nothing changes; and so doesn't the demand for said messaging.

PETRAEUS: Russia is taking incredible punishment right now. Ukraine is doing far more damage, very precisely. Ukraine has hit every single refinery in Russia within 3,000 km of Ukraine. Crimea is going to become an albatross around Putin’s neck, rather than a jewel in his crown.

Turns out rib fractures sometimes can feel like something else. Been walking around with what turned out to be a fracture for a week thinking it's just a bruise. I did have to take ibuprofen for a couple days, but it wasn't as bad as I'd expect

In the meantime, my makeshift water fountain in the backyard has finally drawn attention of a hedgehog family. Funny little guys

Got stung by a hornet, first time in my life. Didn't know we had a nest nearby. Surprisingly mild, like a yellowjacket sting, maybe a bit more lasting. Expected much worse. No painkillers, no ice required, probably won't feel it by tomorrow evening already. So much talk.

I can't believe these are the people at the top of our civilization. Valorized, revered. Unbelievable. Broken, raging mediocrities, cowards and slaves, blind, and completely confused. I can't believe we deserve what's coming for not stopping them. I can't believe nobody is even trying.

You know that for entire industries across the world, a warming up planet means more money, right. Like they're directly incentivized to not just do nothing about it, but actively make the situation worse.

I'm so glad I can get away with existing without wearing glasses. Broke my last ones 11 years ago, never wore them since. Tried wearing them outside - once, at like 20, unbearable. I'd probably only wear them again if I lived in a forest full time; the shit around me, I don't need any more details.

Baby’s first contact lenses and after fumbling around trying to get them in and out I can just… see? Road signs have words on them and I can read them?! Holy shit this is bizarre

The whole Danube story (which affected both Romania and Hungary) needs to be as loud as possible, on the EU level. In a better case, it will lead to a wider and faster adoption of solar. Won't stop climate change, but at least can prevent immediate humanitarian crises in the region.

Cristi Proistosescu@cristiproist.bsky.social · 2w ago

Low flow on the Danube means Romania is about to close its only nuclear power plant (20% of total energy production). Breathless 24/7 coverage of the historical drought and impending energy crises, not one mention of climate change. In fact pundits are angry Romania recently closed a coal plant.

PSA: jumping spiders really do drink water from qtips, if offered gently. Sustain your local wildlife y'all

Yep. Not having any public reputation gives me what I call the "privilege/responsibility of a fool" - to say things others can't. It's why I behave so radioactively. And even with that, there's a host of things I cannot talk about, because those most eager to know these things are harmful idiots.

This week, I take on a tension I have been navigating for years, at the heart of communicating about the metacrisis: the hazards that arise from sharing true information with a global audience.

Happy SysAdmin day to all who celebrates! 🫡 Fittingly, my on-call is today, so please don't celebrate too much

Even stranger to realize that we, individuals, every single one of us, somehow are at the foundation of all this. But if we think about it, it's really not: the system, as atrocious as it is, promises survival. And people will increasingly tolerate being lied to and even getting scammed in exchange.

@glassbeads.dev · 3w ago

At this point, everything is existential for everyone, and those with the most leverage use it the quickest. The decision space is squeezing, fast, and will keep squeezing in the future - unless/until the solution to our environmental crisis is found and implemented.

Elon paved his way to becoming the most powerful man on the planet with literal crimes and atrocities. None of the checks that were supposedly there to stop him, did; instead, the system enabled him. Imagine he starts using his power to dismantle it now. He'd be imprisoned or killed, instantly.

Systems have gravitational pulls. To escape these gravitational pulls, we'd need to develop *and maintain* sufficient escape velocity. It should be crystal clear to everyone by this point that the velocity we manage to gain, the ways we do it now, is not enough. It's near zero, in fact.

All of that said, using animal products, especially meat, should be shameful. It is shameful, no matter personal choice or otherwise. It's not something to be proud of and boast about.

When I fled, I went vegan for two years. Went abruptly. It was great, it felt great; but eventually, unknowingly I developed osteoporosis and broke my shoulder in a stupidest "wouldn't have happened otherwise" way possible. Two months in with my injury I, under family pressure, switched back.

George Monbiot@georgemonbiot.bsky.social · 3w ago

It's a point I've been trying to make for a long time: there is no good way to meet even 10% of current demand for animal products. They trash the living world, whichever way you do it. If you want to reduce your impact, switch to a plant-based diet. www.theguardian.com/environment/...

Like, how many idealized human archetypes we've invented so far? We also keep inventing new ones, and using those already invented without thinking too much. Yet none of them are real, and never were. They cannot be. They are to human minds what Barbie dolls are to human bodies.
