The other week I checked into a Doncaster Lakeside hotel. It was the height of the heatwave. I had shorts on. The hotel had no air-con. The poor receptionist was melting as he apologised for the inevitable daft heat in my room. Then as I turned for the lift he said ‘still, nice leg view at least’

In London. Me at 6.30pm: ‘Maybe it would be good to watch the game in the pub, be around other people who are invested in it’ Me at 7pm: [Gets on Tube. Half a dozen lads pile in and sing ‘Ten German Bombers’ for the entirety of their journey… Goes straight to hotel room]

Huge respect to Y Gwasanaeth Tân who’ve somehow managed to bring the wildfire on Sychnant Pass above Dwgyfylchi and Conwy under control. Could see how quickly the fire was spreading from here (5 miles away) yesterday evening. Incredible effort to get control of it in the warm wind we’ve had today.

A view looking toward the Carneddau mountain range in North Wales from Nant y Gamar. Smoke from wildfires can be seen blowing from the landscape between the peaks of Mynydd y Dref and Tal y Fan out to sea.

I still find Novak Djokovic really hard to warm to. Undeniably talented, but he just comes across as a bit of an emotion void. I reckon even if you asked his wife what he’s really like she’d pause for a while before eventually replying ‘well, he’s very good at tennis’.

I just think that if Wimbledon is going to persist in calling them ‘wildcards’ they have to start issuing them to people other than tennis players. Tennis guy vs tennis guy: safe, boring, samey Tennis guy vs retired postmaster from Dorking: chaos, genuine jeopardy, someone to really root for

I hope people don’t stick too rigidly to the idea of never meeting your heroes. I played in a centre half partnership with one of mine today. Achieved the dreams of 17–20 year old me, and had a really enjoyable day in the process. Lovely man is Barry Miller, still oozes class at 50.
