The Sound - From The Lion's Mouth. A mighty album.
Neil Young & Crazy Horse - Return To Greendale. Greendale is never going to be my one of my favourite Neil Young albums but this live version is, for me, a distinct improvement on the original.
Ron Carter - Where? Carter was a cellist before he took up the bass and he plays cello on several tracks on this, his debut album as leader. Eric Dolphy and Mal Waldron add their own paricular magic too. A really nice album. #Jazzsky
King Crimson - Absent Lovers: Live In Montreal 1984. This excellent live album features Crimson's last performance with this lineup. It would be ten years before they re-emerged as the "double trio" that recorded Thrak.
Willie Nelson - Red Headed Stranger. The first time I heard anything from this brilliant album was when Time Of The Preacher was used on the Edge Of Darkness soundtrack.
On the bus to the dentist and it's not goiing to be pleasant.
Frank Sinatra - Only The Lonely. Sad Frank is the best Frank. Moody and magnificent.
Wally - Wally. Produced by Rick Wakeman and Whispering Bob Harris, this is the first of two albums by the band. Prog with a touch of country rock, it reminds me a little of Bored Civillians by Keith Cross and Peter Ross. Nice album.
Emerson, Lake & Palmer - Brain Salad Surgery. Karn Evil 9 is classic over the top ELP, but I find the rest a bit of a mixed bag. Toccata and Still... are OK, but I never saw the point of Jerusalem and Benny The Bouncer sounds like a Benny Hill song. Karn Evil 9 is great, though.
Managed to find a near mint copy of Fatima Mansions' magnificent debut mini album Against Nature for just over a fiver on Ebay and I couldn't be happier.
In roughly chronological order, these are nine albums that were important in the development of my musical taste over the years. They're not all my favourites (though most are) and I could easily compile another dozen such lists. Might do a jazz one next.
Yes - Keys To Ascension 2. Mind Drive, eh? What a track.
Jackie McLean - One Step Beyond McLean - alto sax Grachan Moncur III - trombone Bobby Hutcherson - vibes Eddie Khan - bass Tony Williams - drums First of a trio of great albums recorded with Moncur and Hutcherson, the others being Moncur's Evolution and McLean's Destination...Out! #Jazzsky
Bryan Ferry - Bête Noire. This immaculately produced opus from Mr. Ferry features David Gilmour and Johnny Marr amonst its contributors.
The Three Sounds - Soul Symphony. Bluesy piano jazz from Gene Harris' trio with orchestral accompaniment. The title track is a 26 minute delight. Very nice. #Jazzsky
Eddie Gale - Black Rhythm Happening. Free jazz meets soul and a gospel choir with powerful playing from trumpeter Gale. Elvin Jones on drums. Sometimes joyous, sometimes atmospheric, smetimes plain wild, always excellent. Great album. #Jazzsky
Tom Verlaine - Flash Light. Cracking record. One of Verlaine's best.
Good evening. It's time for some more Prog Todd. This coloured vinyl reissue sounds great. Bonkers but brilliant.
