This is extremely cool and yes this contrarianism is partly because I am a little jealous of the solar physicists being able to spatially resolve a stellar surface, but the solar physics community's single-minded pursuit of resolving finer and finer features is hugely detrimental to the field.

This is the highest-resolution view of the surface of the Sun. Ever. Taken by the NSF's Daniel K. Inouye Solar Telescope, features as small as 19 km across can be resolved. The wispy things are magnetic field boundaries formed by Kelvin-Helmholtz instabilities. The island of Ireland for scale.

I have a lot of reasons to be tired and miserable but the bureaucracy of dealing with my residency/immigration status (or lack thereof) is one of the biggest ones.

The average America is just totally, completely wrong about immigration, thanks to a combination of a lack of education and a deluge of right-wing propaganda for which the left has never had a remotely satisfactory answer. The standard normie response of "Just come legally!" is utterly unrealistic.

Today I will acknowledge the end of the workday and refrain from opening my laptop, looking up stuff on my phone, reading from a paper stack, or writing notes and/or pseudocode on scrap paper. I will not look at Slack or email. I will read part of a book and/or play a videogame. The day is done.

Why thank you for letting me know that I didn't get the job 8 months after submission, I was still on tenterhooks to find out.

Turns out the new insurance I am required to use for J1 status has much higher copays than the normal plan. Someday I should try to do an inventory of all the little ways this country reminds me it doesn't want me here.

It is not ideal that I have lost track of the number of times I have slept in an airport.

I am once again reminded that leaving my house and interacting with people I like enriches my life. I will soon forget this fact and live as a hermit whose only connection to society is through Zoom for months until reminded again by circumstance.

If smallsat constellation missions are going to be a thing, can someone submit a proposal for a few different wavelength range spectrographs in orbits where we can get coordinated observations of the Sun? Prioritize spectral resolution and net wavelength coverage, dismiss spatial resolution.

Now I want mangoes and I don't live near a participating Costco.

If at the end of all this the result is scholars cite more selectively and intentionally, ensuring nothing cited is a sloppy or false lead, that's probably a success story.

"don't cite what you haven't read" remains the basic entry level academic responsibility; & if your discpline "doesn't have that as a norm" then sorry, your discipline needs reforming for this new world. Citations are structural parts of trust and knowledge building, not trinkets or optional extras

Another day where I stop working, go downstairs to eat, get distracted by thinking about work and read/write a bunch of stuff using my phone and pen/paper that is work but not on laptop, and realize it is after midnight. I have gotten too comfortable using my phone to look up code and papers.

I just made this connection and I don't think I know anyone on here who might get the reference except @shivambhatt.bsky.social and @nameshiv.bsky.social.
