Our two part CG&A issue on critical visualization has been published!! Critical vis considers the context of data and visualization; asking Qs about the way we use and understand data+vis (who is it for? who benefits?). A stellar group of article ime www.computer.org/csdl/magazin...
so so excited to be speaking at VK this year — it’s an amazing line up where folks from around the world will talk about visualizing complexity and resilience ✨

National identities and rivalries still drive changes

I've noticed a lot of new followers recently — thanks to the Vis Researcher starter pack! If you're interested in visualization research, you might find vispubs.com useful. It's a site I created to make it easier to access visualization publications and related resources.
In honor of International Women’s Day and Women’s History Month, I wrote this article for republic.com.ng, exploring how African feminist thought invites us to question what it means to be a "feminist human" in an anti-rights era. republic.com.ng/february-mar...

"the study concluded that reCAPTCHA has cost society an estimated 819 million hours of human time valued at $6.1 billion in wages while generating massive profits for Google through its tracking capabilities and data collection"
“…Google's widely-used CAPTCHA system is primarily a mechanism for tracking user behavior and collecting data while providing little actual security against bots.”
"ChatGPT and other Large Language Models are not a decision-making technology, they are decision-removing technologies. They generate text, but most powerfully, they generate pretext." Wonderful insight by @eryk.bsky.social, as usual. mail.cyberneticforests.com/a-fork-in-th...

As @juusokoponen.bsky.social alerted me today, the Visualizing Knowledge conference in Helsinki 🇫🇮 will be taking place on 6 June. If you’re a data viz conference enthusiast you could swing over there then bounce straight over to Florida 🇺🇸 for Outlier the week after. (I’m aiming to get to VK25)
I mean this whole thread is worth reading (esp the part about journalists wanting to make their work accessible but it comes down to those in power) but this is what got me... let's not cut people off from the news. let's start our designs with accessibility considerations first
The news is for everyone. The news is for you as you age and lose your sight. The news is for your loved ones living with disabilities. The news is for the kid with a disability you saw being bullied in high school. The news is for people you've never met and don't understand. Make it accessible.
what a beautiful venue at the old Anatomiegebouw for #cestlavis gives me slight poor things vibes—perfect for a talk about hauntings 👻
one of my favorite parts of living in europe is the ability to take trains everywhere (delays and all) see you all at @graphichunters.bsky.social #cest-la-vis soon :)
sooooo happy to see die work wear on bluesky
My aesthetic beliefs are perfectly aligned with my political beliefs bc both value pluralism. You can wear a traditional coat and tie if you want, or not! But there are parameters to learning how to speak well. You can't just smash letters together and expect to communicate.
