Former Governor of the Garden State. Husband to Tammy.

Congratulations, Governor Sherrill! This is a truly historic and joyous day for New Jersey. Mikie has done it all. Like a true Naval aviator, she has navigated the chaos of Congress with grit and grace. She has devoted her life to serving our country.

It has been an extraordinary run. As I leave the State House for the last time as Governor, I am proud to say we are leaving our children a state that is better than we found it. A New Jersey that is stronger, fairer, and more responsible.

Eight years ago today, I stood on stage and took the oath as the 56th Governor of New Jersey. During our final days in office, I’m proud to say that we’ve kept our promise to build a New Jersey that is stronger and fairer than ever before.

Today, I signed legislation creating new oversight and establishing new transparency requirements for charter schools. Together, we are setting a higher standard for charter schools and giving the NJ Dept. of Education greater authority to hold them accountable to taxpayers and communities.

Before I entered office, the last time New Jersey received a credit rating upgrade was in 2005. In the past three years, we have secured NINE credit rating upgrades. By contrast, the prior administration had 11 credit rating downgrades.

At a time when New Jersey is ascendant, there is only one thing that can stand in our way – and that is ourselves. We cannot repeat the mistakes of the past. That is why, when I entered office in 2018, I promised to turn things around as Governor.

We have set New Jersey on course to a cleaner, more sustainable future. A future where we meet our responsibility to combat climate change while also creating new sources of affordable, reliable energy that lower costs in the long-term.

When the Supreme Court launched an unprecedented assault on reproductive rights, we — in New Jersey — fought back. Months before the Court issued its dreadful Dobbs decision, we took action and codified the right to abortion.

Thanks to the leadership of Lt. Governor Way, New Jersey’s democracy is stronger, and more secure, than ever before. We have set the national standard for protecting the integrity of our democratic process.

We restored funding for long-neglected priorities — pensions, public education, public transit, women’s health care — AND secured NINE consecutive credit rating upgrades in just three years, after a generation of downgrades.

We were told that reforming a broken criminal justice system would jeopardize public safety, and what did we do? We reduced New Jersey’s prison population to its lowest levels in decades — AND brought homicides and shootings down to record lows at the same time.

We were told raising the minimum wage would kill jobs and crash the economy, and what did we do? We passed a law nearly doubling the minimum wage — AND built the fastest-growing economy in the entire Northeast. All at the same time.

Today at 3:00 p.m., I will deliver my final State of the State Address. Over the past eight years, we have built a New Jersey that is stronger AND fairer than ever before. We were who we said we’d be — and we did what we said we’d do. Let us reflect on the progress we have made together.

The official closing of Netflix on Fort Monmouth affirms that the birthplace of film is where its future is being built once again. Fort Monmouth is no longer a dormant site — it will be a place where our production workforce can grow and a symbol of New Jersey’s vibrant economic future.

Linda Callahan worked tirelessly to make the world more compassionate and just. She will be missed by everyone whose life she touched. We are sending our heartfelt condolences and prayers to Pat, their four beloved children, and their grandchildren during this difficult time.

Governor Dick Codey distinguished himself as the consummate public servant, working alongside New Jerseyans of all beliefs and backgrounds to chart a brighter path forward. Tammy and I are sending our love and deepest condolences to Dick's wife, their two sons, and the entire Codey family.

Somerset County is fortunate to be represented by so many outstanding leaders. Congratulations to the public servants sworn in today in Somerville: Commissioner Melonie Marano, Commissioner Elizabeth Graner, Surrogate Tina Jalloh, and Sheriff Darrin Russo.

On National Law Enforcement Appreciation Day, we joined the Sicknick family in South River to remember U.S. Capitol Police Officer Brian Sicknick. Officer Sicknick lost his life after courageously defending the United States Capitol from insurrectionists on January 6, 2021.
