Summer’s End. youtu.be/Cflw6u7nAN8?...

For me, summer’s end came yesterday when I watched my last day of English domestic cricket for the 2026 season. I was at Edgbaston, Birmingham, to see Warwickshire clinch the County Championship for the ninth time by beating Leicestershire. Although the cricket season is now over I’ll still be a regular visitor to Edgbaston throughout the winter to take part in weekly batting sessions in the nets at the Indoor Cricket Centre.

Last Time I Saw Her. youtu.be/nrb8FufZ6cA?...

Sometimes an image strikes a particular chord with me and I end up reworking it in a variety of ways using different media. One such image is of a person standing on a bridge wearing a red hooded jacket photographed on a rainy autumn day in the English Lake District. I’ve previously done a couple of paintings as well as various digital versions but my most recent efforts have involved linocut printing.

My most recent versions of this image are linocut prints focusing on the figure in the red jacket. Rather than printing with two different colours I found it better to cut out the coat printed on red tissue paper and stick it onto the black ink only print.

Rather than trying to carve the background into the linocut printing block I decided to draw it in by hand using a black ink fineliner pen. I’ve produced several versions, each one different in some subtle way.

This version was completely hand drawn using a black ink fineliner pen with the red colour again provided by red tissue paper carefully cut out and stuck onto the partly drawn image. I made no attempt to recreate the original photograph and instead enjoyed making up a fantasy landscape. No doubt I’ll return to this motif again in the future and rework it in some other way.

The statue of Joseph Chamberlain (1836 - 1914) sitting on the steps leading to Chamberlain Square in Birmingham, UK.
Chamberlain served as mayor and later as the Member of Parliament for Birmingham. Although never Prime Minister, he was one of the most influential politicians of the time. One of his sons, Neville Chamberlain, did however become Prime Minister between 1937 and 1940.

Oxygen. youtu.be/yEm5LWAwUtE?...

The statue of Joseph Priestley. (1733 - 1804) in Chamberlain Square, Birmingham, UK. Priestley is widely recognised for independently discovering oxygen. He isolated the gas on August 1, 1774, by focusing sunlight on mercuric oxide with a large magnifying glass. He called the gas "dephlogisticated air" and was the first to publish his results in late 1774. Priestley had a long association with Birmingham and lived in the city between 1780 and 1791. He was a member of Birmingham’s famous Lunar Society, a group of scientists, industrialists, philosophers and other intellectuals who met informally to discuss the issues of the day. Priestley is arguably one of the most important characters in the history of science.
