People Make Games just dropped a new documentary in my favourite genre: "Quinns travels to meet a beautiful maniac who's doing mind-bending game design" www.youtube.com/watch?v=Is8N...

Do you worldbuild mechanics/systems/ecology/factions first or themes/cool ideas/characters first? Or do you not bother 😆 I'm very silly and started with plate tectonics 🤓 Pictured: my world Ardos

I'm cautiously optimistic about RPG Trader. If you don't know, it's a new platform for buying and selling rpgs just like DriveThruRPG, Itch, and Lulu. What's making me optimistic? It's rpg-focused. It does away with the 5-star rating system. It has coherent product categories. rpg-trader.com

When a dragon has just 1 hit point and a maze of obstacles, combat is like an open-ended puzzle. The challenge: the player characters only have 1 hit point too—and the dragon has a lot fewer obstacles. A small playtesting update about death without hit points:
Dying from the 1 HP Dragon
How does life and death work in this game without hit points?

I will always find a game designed for a hyper specific thing to be way more interesting than something generic. “In this game you play as space pirates who rob space trains” is way more compelling design than “This is a space game where you can do anything.”

Oh shit oh golly it's the finale of Quinns Quest Season 2 I could have reviewed other, bigger-name fantasy TTRPGs that would have gotten me more traffic. Instead, I chose to review the one that you should actually know about www.youtube.com/watch?v=wH5-...
What a brilliant review. Watch it.

DriveThruRPG/Dungeon Master's Guild is bad for the industry. They take 30-50%. Discoverability is terrible. You're competing with slop, which turns customers off from third-party in general. You have no way of knowing who bought your products. You can't offer better discounts on other sites. 1/5
I think there are certain TTRPG spaces, platforms, that are basically groupon. You think being on there is good for you, but it's not. It's good for them. Your customers are actually their customers. www.youtube.com/watch?v=qcCw...

Holy shit this article is so good and fully explained OSR-style play to me 🤯
Character death in OSR isn't simple cruelty. I posit it's a design language. This piece explores what lethality actually communicates about your game world and why it matters. 🎲💀 #OSR #TTRPG #DungeonsAndDragons #RPGBlog #OldSchoolDnD #GameDesign #TheRPGGazette
Lots of tech dudes think the "idea" is the important part of creating, not the creative journey you take through work to give that idea actual meaning. Ideas are the easiest, cheapest and least fulfilling part of it. Giving ideas life through work, and sharing that work with others, is the stuff.
Seriously it’s like there is a giant chunk of tech people who don’t understand that when you’ve learned how to write, you feel proud, you look forward to doing more of it, you cheerfully neglect your other work just so you can write more
I'm designing outside of D&D 5e or 5.5e at this point, HOWEVER, I am fiercely editing a really fresh and weird genre mashup for it: Serenity Springs, a 1950's horror setting & adventure. The kickstarter is up, check it out if it strikes your fancy 😊 www.kickstarter.com/projects/gri...
