"goofy, overlong movies larded with unearned sentiment and cheap gravitas" seems to me to describe 90% of the movies coming out of Hollywood these days.

The main problem that the movie of "The Odyssey" is facing is that it is directed by Christopher Nolan, a bland director who makes goofy, overlong movies larded with unearned sentiment and cheap gravitas. The HomeGoods idea of great art (which I shouldn't say because I enjoy going to HomeGoods).

It is fundamentally true that nothing can replace regional newspapers (and their scrappy alt-weekly foils). But the vacuum of book reviewing has not been complacently left unfilled and it would be good to focus on everything that has been emerging.

Many people seem shocked that a committed writer would prefer the time and opportunity simply to write rather than the blandishments of those bestowing recognition and prize money. DeWitt's case helps us disentangle the art from the machinery.
