Seeing LTT working on a video for ASNs and BGP and dubbing it "becoming our own ISP" has me concerned for the future of the internet. Either we're about to see a crap ton of ASNs pop up, or a crap ton of fraud w/ARIN and disappointed LTT fanboys lol.
This project has been a total blast to work on, I'm looking forward to see how far I can take it! 😁

Writing this up was alot of fun, lots of research and recalling how I did things. I thought it would be a nice way of encouraging others to follow in my footsteps and start their own ASNs :)

Lately I've just been tacking awesome things onto my "yeah, I've done that" list with my business. It's a dual-edge blade; yes I did it, but, it's another nail in the coffin for my day-job. I'm really hoping this pays off, I'm looking to make a move in 2027, but wouldn't say no to doing it sooner.
I started SCREAMING when I got this working, and my partner was like "what happened!!!???" and came rushing in. I've been cracking at this all day, and finally got it working! He just walked away when he realized it was nerd stuff. I AM my own ISP, and that rocked my world after realizing that! ☺️
PhoenixNet-Labs@phoenixnet-labs.com · 2mo agoOk-ok so maybe I just couldn't help myself... But WE JUST ROUTED OUR FIRST PACKET(S) THROUGH OUR ASN!!! 🥳 Complex route, but in short: Internet -> BGP-RTR -> (WG Tunnel to Server) -> OPNSense -> Client!
Not going to sugarcoat this, I got EXTRAORDINARILY LUCKY with this contract. I found someone, emailed them politely, and managed to negotiate a deal, not something I do too often, but negotiation is power! Looking forward to this after Anthrocon! It's going to be a wild ride!

Learning BGP with my friends has been a total whirlwind! Who knew this much was involved with operating what's essentially the *backbone* of the internet! I'm really looking forward to working on this project! It's going to be awesome!

2AM activities - clicking sliders on pre-staged DNS records and migrating a VM, then nuking the shit out of a baremetal server. Good times... Glad it's finally done though :)

Respectfully, we have also concluded our service with NOCIX in response to recent company practices and concerns. We wish them luck on their future endeavors.
It has been decided, our ASN is: AS402663! Next-step, addressing!
Finally bit the bullet on purchasing / finalizing our ASN. This has been one of those "I'm not sure... Maybe... Why do I...?" type things, but honestly, it should be a good step in the right direction for the company. Will reply to this thread when it's assigned with what it is! 😎
Finally getting around to running backups again on a regular basis. Used to use Veeam NFR prior to forming the business proper, but now that I've gone pro, I'd rather reduce the corner cutting. Using a tool called "Backrest" that uses Restic to automate backups! github.com/garethgeorge...
I'm just now realizing the ultimate pivot is going from homelab to home-business. I can list this "operation" as career experience now on my resume and highlight all of the skills and technologies I needed to build it from the ground up. 🤯

Wanted to talk about a few things: Yes - I did start a business, I'm thinking of it as a way to explore what *I* want to do. I enjoy my 9-5, but I thought it would be a great way to branch-out on my own accord and do more. BUT, I'm not sure what direction I want to take it yet!
Hot take, @anthrocon.org needs to implement a lottery system like every other con that's on the same level of scale. Software issues, technical issues, overbooking, and hell even the overhead of traffic from users trying to book a room could be easily avoided if they setup a simple lottery system.
I mentioned this weekend that "nobody gets to ride for free" when it comes to users on my Plex server, and I got a funny look. Most folks on there are either good friends who have exchanged goods or services in the past, or just people I really like that *earned* access. Anybody else do this?
