On this date in Weather History... Severe thunderstorms dropped four inches of hail covering the ground in Adair and Union Counties in Iowa. The hail drifted into six foot mounds and in some protected areas, the hail remained on the ground until the end of the month (about 26 days). August 6, 1890

On this date in Weather History... A cloudburst near Philadelphia turned small creeks and streams feeding into the Delaware River into raging torrents. As much as sixteen inches of rain fell in three hours. The flood waters destroyed multiple bridges and caused nineteen fatalities. August 5, 1843
