As we honor the accomplishment of FMLA, it's important to remember where we started and how far we have left to go. This long and winding road has given millions of people the ability to better take care of themselves and their families. 1/3

The Road to
Family and Medical Leave

1. WWI - Women begin entering the workforce at higher rates to support their husband's during the war.

2. 1972 - Equal Employment Opportunity is approved with guidelines stating that employers must treat any disabilities from pregnancy- including miscarriage, abortion, or childbirth and recovery-as they would any other disability.

3. 1978 - Pregnancy Discrimination Act (PDA) is amended into Title VII of The Civil Rights Act (1964) to outlaw discrimination based on pregnancy, childbirth, or any related medical needs.

4. 1984 - Parental and Disability Leave Act introduced which would have allowed unpaid leave for new parents, parents of a sick child, or for an employee's own temporary disability. The bill would be revamped and renamed to the Parental and Medical Leave Act before finally being named the Family and Medical Leave Act in 1986.

5. 1993 - After being vetoed in 1990 by then President, George H.W. Bush, the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) was the first major piece of legislation signed into law by President Bill Clinton in 1993.

Jan. 30th National Shutdown ✏️ Student Walkout Guide 🚌

NATIONAL SHUTDOWN
STUDENT WALKOUT GUIDE
Somali and Black student organizations in Minneapolis are calling for a shutdown on Friday, January 30th, after the execution-style murder of Alex Pretti by immigration officers. They're asking people across the country to support the call.
On January 20th, thousands of students across the country walked out to protest ICE terror in our communities, and to demand justice for Renee Nicole Good, Three days later, the people of Minnesota organized a powerful shutdown - no work, no school, no shopping.
This week, after Alex's murder and while Congress is debating giving ICE even more money, it's time to take our movement to the next level. ICE has kidnapped our neighbors and classmates; they do not make our communities more safe. We demand ICE out for good!
Students are always at the heard of movements for justice across the world.
On January 30th, we will organize walkouts across the country and stand in solidarity with immigrant communities in Minnesota and everywhere else!
Walkouts are not actually spontaneous; they require intention and dedication from leaders like YOU to make them happen. Take the following steps as quickly as possible before Friday:

(1) OUTREACH
* Get creative with how you will get the word out! Identify student leaders and/or organizations who are connected to large sections of the student body, and are supportive of the cause.
Sports teams, clubs, and other student groups will be able to access large groups through their groupchats/email threads. Try to find friendly faces in these big groupings to share the message along.
* Make a flyer that can be shared through text and social media for more effective promotion. Print copies of the flyer for you and your friends to hand out to everyone at school. The flyer should specify the time for the walkout (we suggest early afternoon).
* Create a text loop or group chat with students who are
supportive in order to coordinate with each other.

* Identify staff members/teachers that are supportive of the walkout. They can provide support in talking with your administration.

(2) WALKOUT PREPARATIONS
* Plan a time to make protest signs before Friday. Teachers may have supplies you and your classmates can use for this. Try to make signs on poster paper so they can be folded into backpacks and jackets.
Make sure the signs are school appropriate!
* With the help of a supportive teacher, meet with your administration about sanctioning the walkout, defining the length of the action if necessary. This meeting should happen as soon as possible. If your administration refuses to sanction the walkout, don't let that stop you. You are standing up on the right side of history!
* Your walkout will have the biggest impact if a lot of people hear about it - so make a media plan! This can easily be done by assigning one or two students to take short 15-30 sec videos of students chanting as they walk out of the building, and conducting short interviews (1 minute) with students about why they decided to walk out.
Send those videos to local media or activist groups with big social media followings, and email them
to nationalshutdown26@gmail.com.

(2) PREPARATIONS CONT.
* Assign a few students to lead chants and give speeches.
This will help make your walkout feel more powerful and exciting.
* Create a meetup plan with other local activists. If other schools are organizing walkouts and/or if local activist groups are organizing a protest on Friday afternoon, make a plan to meet up with them after your walkout. Everyone from your school can travel together to the meetup location. People from different schools and organizations meeting up will show the power of our movement!
[3) WALKING OUT
* We have safety in numbers. Recruiting the largest number of students and teachers possible will expand the impact. Make sure to stick together during the walkout!
* Lead by example. If you are reading this, you are a leader! Walking out can be scary, but we give each other courage. Do your best to spread that courage [welcoming students as they join the walkout, leading chants, giving a speech, etc.).
