Wednesday 26 August is International Dog Day, so the #GwentArchiveDogShow is back! First run in 2024, the virtual show saw 8 dogs from our collections compete head to head and our winner was chosen by you!

Before the introduction of the National Health Service in 1948, local hospitals were funded by subscriptions and voluntary contributions from individuals and local organisations. In 1922, the Abertillery & District Hospital Linen League was set up by local women to offer their help to the hospital.

Cyn sefydlu’r Gwasanaeth Iechyd Gwladol ym 1948, ariannwyd ysbytai lleol gan danysgrifiadau a chyfraniadau gwirfoddol gan unigolion a sefydliadau lleol. Ym 1922, sefydlwyd Cynghrair Llieiniau Ysbyty Abertyleri a'r Cylch gan fenywod lleol i gynnig eu cymorth i'r ysbyty.

In 1940 #OnThisDay Gwent Archives received its first deposited item. The item which started our substantial collection ‘The Sheriffs of Monmouthshire 1541-1937’ which was written by William Gardner under the request of Frederick Robjent, who was Sheriff himself in 1937.

#ArydiwrnodHwn ym 1940 derbyniodd Archifau Gwent ei eitem gyntaf ar adnau. Yr eitem a ddechreuodd ein casgliad helaeth oedd ‘The Sheriffs of Monmouthshire 1541-1937’ a ysgrifennwyd gan William Gardner ar gais Frederick Robjent, yr oedd ef ei hun yn Siryf ym 1937.

Today sees the start of the Royal Welsh Show! The Show was first held in 1904, at Aberystwyth. It was held annually at different locations, alternating between North and South Wales, until 1963 when its permanent site at Llanelwedd, near Builth Wells was established.

Mae heddiw’n ddechrau Sioe Frenhinol Cymru! Cynhaliwyd y Sioe gyntaf yn 1904, yn Aberystwyth. Fe’i cynhaliwyd yn flynyddol mewn mannau gwahanol, rhwng y Gogledd a’r De am yn ail, tan 1963 pan sefydlwyd ei safle parhaol yn Llanelwedd, wrth ymyl Llanfair ym Muallt.

A recipe to relieve Cholera Morbus, from Mary Long’s recipe book dated 1828 (D361/F1/E/9). Cholera Morbus was the nineteenth century term for non-epidemic cholera and other stomach problems such as gastroenteritis.

This is a new accession to Gwent Archives which shows the sale of Nevill Hall and all the estates of the Marquiss of Abergavenny in September 1916.
