In Donkey Kong 64, Diddy, Tiny, Lanky and Chunky are all unlocked by freeing them from cages. While DK appears to be unlocked by default, this is false: internally, the game only unlocks him by opening the door to exit DK Island. The entirety of DK Island is his personal cage.

The tutorial segment of Donkey Kong 64 takes place inside DK Island. After exiting out into the overworld, Donkey Kong gains access to a Tag Barrel, which shows the other four Kongs, yet to be unlocked, as colorful question marks.
The Kongs are all unlocked by freeing them from their cages that they were imprisoned in by King K. Rool.
It is logical to assume Donkey Kong is simply unlocked by default, but this is false! Clipping out of DK Island and entering the Tag Barrel with another Kong later shows that DK has his own "yet to be unlocked" question mark!
So what causes him to be unlocked?
It is hitting this switch to open the gate to exit the inside of DK Island, which counts as his own personal cage.

Replaying Mother 3 but not sure I can connect with the setting. A bunch of fascist pig thugs ruled by a narcissistic manchild take over a society which is too spiritually poisoned by love of money to offer any meaningful resistance. I mean nothing like that could ever happen in real life

Fell down a rabbit hole and discovered plastic canvas I can cross stitch on! Using this nefarious material to make keychains for the squad, starting with this one for my husband: the Umbrella logo from Resident Evil, which I patterned myself! โ˜บ๏ธ
