formulating ideas for the game that pairs with my server engine... it doesn't *have* to generate a whole galaxy, but it is already set up to do so. could just as well be a giant database of other world info. I just want to keep the packets flowing.

"I cannot tell you a bit about myself, because I am dead." ... making a homemade MMO server and a game or two M or WNBA, Star Trek, Linux, C++, Godot Engine, piano, DIY, girldad, Space Camp alum, degreed archaeologist... ???? fuck maga - no AI
Really, there's no better time for me to go all in on creating a world that is better than this one. It's shaping up to be a sci-fantasy builder sim thing. Pics and vids soon, I swear. been fighting with shadows, gravity, shaders, and adjusting scale all week.
I didn't listen to her music privately and never watched any of her movies intentionally - but guess what... a good person doing good things can have impact whether or not you seek them out. My daughter was in her book club - and ... OK... I went to Dollywood once in the early 90s.
I started with a simple C++ tcp recv() loop, 3 years ago... now I've almost got an MMO server engine. as a self taught coder - lots of C++ and sqlite documentation, stackexchange posts, reddit comments, and a good old fashioned trial and error... but no AI required
(Online) Account creation and login is 90% finished, character creation is done, character retrieval is not done. (Offline) set up a console that shows the planets generating while you wait to get in game - game save system and slots still in progress
At this stage in my efforts, I'm sure my code could be called "spaghetti code," but it is spaghetti that's so delicately twirled around a fine fork. and none is falling off.
said gamedev was over... got more free time... built a double precision godot editor, fixed many problems.
GameDev over for the week. Just got everything that I've been planning out of my head, commited, have a really great framework ready for some weekend polish. GamePlay now, for a minute - because I just discovered I can farm Grade 5 mats from my Dodec (HIP7790-2 jumps from Sothis). #EliteDangerous
racing to catch a sunset on the beach. #GodotEngine #gamedev #mmodev #solodev
About me post (since a few are watching): -Modding/releasing since 1999 -8yrs live emulated MMO server dev&admin -self taught language agnostic coder (pref C++) -2x AAA titles as QA -not an artist, but a good whiteboxer -problem solving is my greatest skill, any problem (in life) -also do plumbing
All rocky bodies generate unique terrain/map, rings have individual tilt - need to re-incorporate individual body rotation and... the dreaded moon logic, next. I added some really primitive boosters and brakes for getting around easier in the cameraship. #gamedev #solodev #GodotEngine
Got the client reading the rotation/revolution data. Hard to see, but each planet is also rotating on its own axis, at its own speed. #gamedev #GodotEngine
Server serves up star systems. Client lets you fly around in them. I'm pushing more and more data through to the client, obvs not using realistic/scientific numbers yet, and don't aim for a realistic simulation, just a very large game world. #gamedev #GodotEngine re: homemade MMO (@Home)
#EliteDangerous Dodec built in HIP 7790 Has a surprisingly well stocked outfitter and shipyard. Has all refinery mats + some ag, Universal Cartographics, Human Tech Broker ofc. Felt so good to transfer all of my ships and gear there to stay. Have to build another security station next...
storms, have to chill on outdoor work brain rot, have to chill on gamedev ... back to #EliteDangerous Bought a Caspian and eng'd the class 8 FSD yesterday, now back to the Clipper and colonizing HIP 7790. No Colonia for me, yet.
The data continues to flow. Started rendering bodies in the client, only size and position information is passed from the server, so far. Testing in a 50 system galaxy. Textures and physics later. re: homemade mmo (Elite Dangerous@Home) #GodotEngine #solodev #MMOdev
re: homemade mmo tl;dr of previous posts Have started a trickle of development updates on a space game inspired by Star Wars Galaxies, Dwarf Fortress, and Elite Dangerous. From scratch in C++ and Godot script. See pics and video and comments posted previously. #GodotEngine #solodev #mmodev
created a game server today in C++ that generates a massive amount of universe data -> to be called upon and rendered in a physics model in #GodotEngine and hopefully become a shared, persistent, explorable, changeable world experience... for a demo website I still hope to re launch soon.
in the up to 10% of the day I get to myself, gotta cycle between playing piano, coding a game, or playing a game (Dwarf Fortress or Elite: Dangerous) It's ED again, right now. 9 stations built in my first colony, taking a break now to exobio and explore in my guardian boosted asp. #EliteDangerous
#GodotEngine #mmodev #solodev Finally... multiplayer sync milestone achieved. Client in Godot/gdscript Basic 3d terrain gen Server in C++ (about 600 lines) All from scratch/theory Player 1 can see Player 2 login and move Now to get it looking "fancy" enough for a video
#godotengine playing on an XBOX 360 controller. will work on the guy fighting back, next, and adding a lot more to the "decision tree"
Even though I have zero time, I just up and started working on a karateka-style game today
#godotengine obviously a few quirks, but still adding solid features to the framework. just trying to blaze through little mundane thing I'll need to be repeatable and even abusable without failing.
