My annual selfie season is late this year. I’m bad at portraits. I know it. I accept it. But every year I take some time to paint my face. I love the color variation in skin tones and the drawing is always a challenge. It’s a nice change from landscapes. acrylic on paper, 11×14”
This one has been taking up a lot of my time. I think it’s done. I hope it’s done. I don’t usually do watercolors this big. I’m anxious to get to a sloppy, fast painting now. Watercolor and gouache on Arches cold press, 12x16”
Busy week moving kids into college but managed to finish this little watercolor + gouache sketch in my sketchbook.
Good morning. A quick sketchbook page before breakfast this morning. Another country road.
This is a 30 minute rebound from that last little gouache that took days. It’s like stretching a rubber band. I can only get so far in one direction before getting pulled back in the other direction. Maybe more like a pendulum? Each is satisfying in its own way. Acrylic on paper, 7x11”
A little gouache sketch in my little sketchbook of one of my favorite spots on the White Clay Creek.
Just another quick sketch. It started to tighten up again. I want these to just be loosey-goosey but it’s hard to escape myself. This was very quick. Acrylic on paper.
The guy in charge of public health says people shouldn’t trust public health.
RFK Jr: "Americans no longer public health, and they shouldn't"
Just horsing around during the World Cup final. The more I try to correct the drawing the more refined it gets. That’s the opposite of what I’m after.
Amish horse. I find horses and cows difficult. It might be because I don’t know their anatomy. I try to just rely on what I’m seeing. The difficulty makes the chase fun. Acrylic on linen.
Some Pennsylvania fields on the way to Penn State last winter. Acrylic on paper.
I try to control watercolors until it twists my brain into a frustrated knot. Then it launches me back in the other direction. Eventually an “impression” won’t be enough and I’ll swing back towards specifics. I’m learning to just ride the waves back and forth rather than fighting them. Acrylic.
I think I’m done playing with this watercolor. That’s almost as much green as the reflecting pool. 15x22”
Progress report. Still working on this. Watercolor. 15x22” Ready to go to a larger oil version.
Happy Father’s Day! Out early today painting large.
