Pound Foolish

Part locker room chronicle, part neo-noir, all American: Pound Foolish tackles a season-in-the-life of a pro football team that has a serial killer in its midst. Someone is murdering women in the orbi...

First profile, second paragraph ends with “douchenozzle” Fourth paragraph ends with “Sisyphusian” This sums up the joy of reading the almanac to me.

It takes a special kind of lunacy to send out an A.I.-generated query that lies about everything, then follow it up with an A.I.-generated response that essentially says, "Yes, I was lying, but you should work with me anyway." (Anyway, my new book POUND FOOLISH comes out 9/1.)

"Totally fair question, and I'd wonder the same thing. That email is real, it's mine, not a scam. I do book marketing outreach for a living, and I email authors directly when a book genuinely stands out to me. Pound Foolish did, which is why the note was that specific."

"It's A.I., man. I know it's A.I. You know it's A.I.

The book isn't out yet. You didn't read it.

Sheesh."

Hi Christopher,

Fair catch, and you deserve a straight answer instead of another polished one.

I didn't read an advance copy. I build these outreach emails from public material, reviews, description, your other books, and yes, writing help, to figure out who might be a genuinely good fit to pich. That "what got me" framing was overstated. That's on me.

Where I wasn't making things up: your track record is real. Slotback Rhapsody, Tulsa, War On Sound, eight years at ESPN, the Publishers Weekly and Midwest Review recognition, an existing football audience that already trusts your voice. That's what actually made me want to reach out about Pound Foolish, not a cover-to-cover read I didn't do.

If you'd rather not hear from me again, I get it and I'll leave it there. If you're open to it, I'd still like to talk about actually getting the book in front of the right readers when it's out, on honest footing this time."

...

" "That's on me." Still A.I.

I think you should know that any self-respecting author will never work with someone who uses A.I.

Yeah, you can take me off your list."
