#POLI1017 #POLI2049 Interesting on the interaction between narrative, identity, and geopolitics

Journal of Global Security Studies@journalofgss.bsky.social · 4d ago

When do narratives become tools of geopolitical balancing? New #JOGSS article by Ryuta Ito introduces “narrative balancing” and three types - deceptive, institutional, and assertive - to explain how states use narratives to constrain rivals and strengthen alignments. 🔗 doi.org/10.1093/jogs...

On the left is the cover of the Journal of Global Security Studies. Along the bottom, the journal’s homepage, https://academic.oup.com/jogss, and Bluesky handle, @journalofgss.bsky.social, appear in white text on a navy-blue background. The main image depicts numerous cargo ships anchored in the blue ocean. Overlaid on the image are the article title and author’s name: “Narrative Balancing as Classical Realist Statecraft in the Indo-Pacific,” by Ryuta Ito.

#POLI1017 #POLI2049 Interesting intervention on ontological security (relevant to our week's on Social Constructivism and Identity), Great Power politics, and Japan over the late 19th and throughout most of the 20th century.

Very happy to see my article “Unravelling military aggression: Ontological insecurity, great power narcissism, and Japan’s international relations, 1868–1971” assigned to an issue of @risjnl.bsky.social It examines connections between great powers and aggression. www.cambridge.org/core/journal...

#POLI1017 #POLI2049 Useful when thinking about the interaction between gender, conflict, and peace processes.

How can Gender Provisions strengthen ceasefires? Siri Aas Rustad and I wrote a @prioresearch.bsky.social policy brief to provide examples & offer practical inspiration for policymakers and peace practitioners working to build more inclusive peace processes. Check it out: www.prio.org/publications...

#POLI2049 Relevant to this week's discussions on post-colonialism in international politics and later discussions in the module on changes in the international order over the course of the 20th century. Also potentially relevant for those working on the case analysis about the Non-Aligned Movement.

Hot off the press! Check out 'Between Bandung, Suez, and Nehru's Feet: Singapore and Global South Solidarities in the Commonwealth' by Muhammad Suhail Mohamed Yazid: doi.org/10.1080/0308...

#POLI2049 Interesting on how ways of visualising international politics, shape how we think, and potentially policy behaviour. Relevant to this week's conversations about the legacies of colonial ways of thinking in international politics Also interesting for #POLI1017

In the modern world of GPS, does the appearance of physical maps matter? Yes, because they play a crucial role in shaping how we (including policy makers) think about the world. I explain why in my latest for @wpr.bsky.social www.worldpoliticsreview.com/maps-geopoli...

#POLI1017 #POLI2049 An interesting intervention arguing that fragmentation and non-state actors of varying kinds suggest international politics is reverting to a pre-modern form of international politics. Links to a number of themes of the modules, including the role of state-centric IR theories.

IR Book of the Week! "Neomedievalism in International Relations" by @alexspalinska.bsky.social. What's old is new again. Drawing on the work of Hedley Bull, book argues that, from tech firms to militant groups, we could be entering a new, global "Middle Ages"

Delighted to see this article, co-authored with @profjackholland.bsky.social, is now out! 'Ontological Security beyond Binaries' makes original contributions to debates on Ontological Security and brOthering; moving beyond identity binaries in Genocide Studies; and theorising IS genocidal violence.

A second new article published this week: Ontological Security beyond Binaries: Islamic State’s brOthering of Jihadist Competitors through Genocide published in ISQ, with Harry Swinhoe academic.oup.com/isq/article/...

Great to see this piece written with Lewis Eves, Gilsun Jeong, and Nandor Revesz is now out. Our focus groups produced some really interesting findings on overlooked factors driving students' AI use and how this relates to broader societal and institutional trends.

Wonkhe@wonkhe.bsky.social · 5mo ago

NEW on Wonkhe: Lewis Eves, Gilsun Jeong, Nandor Revesz and Harrison Swinhoe found that if you ask students why they rely on AI, their answers often point to anxieties about engaging with their tutors buff.ly/fnv5v5K

Just before Xmas, Laura C and I had career firsts: 2 PhD students successfully defended their theses on the same day, passing their vivas. Very many congrats to Dr Laura Rose Brown and Dr Charles Gray! And very many thanks to the internals (Louise and Olaf) and externals (Catherine and Kyle)

A recording of my lecture is now available here. In the missing first 5m, Professor Berry tells the potted history of my rise from 2Cs and a D at A Level, to a Desmond from Nottingham Trent, then from Wollongong (MA) to toil at Aberystwyth, to finally graduating with a PhD from Loughborough in 2008.
