1,000 tonnes of food waste have been recycled in just six months!  Thanks to Hastings residents, our new food waste collection service has reached an incredible milestone, with 1,000 tonnes of food waste recycled since launching just six months ago.

The leaders of Hastings, Lewes and Eastbourne councils have written to Florence Eshalomi MP, Minister for Homelessness, Democracy, Communities and Faith calling for Local Housing Allowance (LHA) to be increased across their areas.  LHA is set by the Department for Work and Pensions,

Cllr Glenn Haffenden with a speech bubble. Text in the bubble reads “The fact that there are hardly any properties that could be rented at LHA rates shows that this needs to be increased. This impacts single people and families alike. Many residents cannot afford to live here. Between 2013 and 2023, house prices in Hastings rose faster than anywhere else in England and rents have increased alongside this, while wages and LHA have not increased at this rate."

Help us protect Hastings Country Park Nature Reserve! We have recently seen a number of incidents of vandalism and anti-social behaviour in Hastings Country Park Nature Reserve, including two people kicking down a gate to force their bikes through.

We are in the final stages of creating our Local Plan to 2041. The plan is one of the most important council documents, as it sets out our vision of how Hastings will develop in the future. It allows us to set out where development can happen, and what would make it acceptable on each potential site

Let’s talk about care and support at home!  East Sussex County Council wants to hear from people who receive care and support at home from a paid care worker, their families and unpaid carers, and people who arrange and pay for their own care.

Now is your final chance to help shape the new Local Plan for Hastings. We have challenging government housing targets, and the plan has to show that we have worked to achieve these. We must balance these targets with our desire to protect green spaces and nature.

We’re pleased that initial work to the West Hill Play Space is now finished. The new equipment includes a multi-play structure with slide, pirouette spinners, toddler play tower, somersault bars, sensory panels and a new surface. We’re still waiting for parts to repair the Sea Swell,

October is Domestic Abuse Awareness Month.  Domestic abuse can happen to anyone. Those living with domestic abuse often need someone to help them out of the situation. Check in on your friends, family, and colleagues as one conversation could make a huge difference.

Hastings Residents have also already helped save 3.4 tonnes of unwanted items from going to waste through 138 doorstep collections. That's enough clothes, books, electrical items and household goods to fill around three large removal vans, all given a second life through reuse and recycling.

Wildflower sowing is underway in Hastings Country Park Nature Reserve! We are pleased to be sowing this year’s wildflower seeds across selected fields in the country park as part of our ongoing Countryside Stewardship programme.

Hastings is part of the Joint Waste and Recycling Committee, where each of the six councils in East Sussex discuss and agree on waste and recycling issues. Residents can submit questions to be asked at meetings by sending them to councillors on the committee. The next meeting is Friday 9 October.

You might have noticed scaffolding at Central Hall, Bank Buildings, while you’re out and about in town.  We know how important Central Hall is to the way Hastings town centre looks, we need to do this work to make sure it stays looking its best into the future.
