The waxwing features a prominent, swept-back crest on its head and a distinct, sharp black mask running across its eyes down to a black throat patch. The bird's wings display intricate markings, including a bold black band outlined with bright yellow stripes along the primary feathers. Its short tail ends in a brilliant, crisp yellow band. The background is a complex network of tangled branches, leaves and berries.
