I am still struggling to process what happened this weekend. Someone I once considered close enough to be family invited me to an event and assured me it would be fine. Instead, I found myself trapped in an environment full of antisemitic rhetoric, bigotry disguised as jokes, and people openly defending streamers who view people like me as inherently evil. As a Jew, l did not feel welcome. I did not feel respected. I did not feel safe. This is someone I spent years believing had grown beyond the prejudices and worldview she was raised with. Someone I defended. Someone I supported. Someone I thought shared my values. This weekend made me realize that either I was completely wrong, or l was being lied to the entire time. I ended up spending money I could not afford to spend just to get away from the convention because remaining there felt genuinely unsafe. And I was trying to figure out how to escape, I was surrounded by people making bigotry into a punchline (because isn't it so funny to think your favorite streamer is a girl who likes girls? it's so hot but it's so funny! lol!) and treating hatred as a difference of opinion.
