...or undergoing 'inosculation', as scientists call it 🤝🌳 Inosculation is a natural process where two trees weave and intertwine together. This connection can provide added structural support and may even allow the trees to share water and nutrients through their joined tissues.

This World Ranger Day, we want to recognise the dedication of the Highgate Wood Ranger team, whose work helps protect nature, support biodiversity and ensure the Wood remains a place for people to connect with the outdoors. Thank you for your knowledge and commitment to this special green space💚

The Wildflower Meadow is coming along nicely!💮 Despite the extreme heat, the meadow is starting to sprout. Our team is looking after it wonderfully, and will do more supportive planting in September to encourage further growth 🪴

One healthy hedgehog! This rotund, well camouflaged little friend was spotted near our rangers' yard the other day. It's excellent to see one looking so well fed - a good sign of how wildlife is doing in the Wood!🦔

A Green Woodpecker, spotted in our wildflower meadow 🪶 They have been seen recently flying down and into the meadow to snack on ants! They're beautiful birds - next time you visit us, stand quietly a few paces back from the meadow and you may see one darting in and out 🐜

30 years on, and we’re delighted to announce that Highgate Wood has once again received a Green Flag Award! We're so proud to be recognised as one of the UK’s best-managed green spaces. Swipe to see photos of three of our teams members who have been with us since that very first award 👉🎉

Wildflower Meadow Update 👏🌷 Right after seed planting, the Wood experienced 2 months of drought - something that can really impact the growth of new plants! The good news is, blue cornflowers are now flowering. Our team have also planted extra seeds in pots, which will be planted soon🪻

A recent survey counted over 46 species of moths in Highgate Wood! This was done using a moth trap, that allows conservationists to survey species without harming them. A range of species shows good biodiversity - something that is essential to a functioning ecosystem.

Summer is an excellent time to see bats across London 🦇 As the evenings get warmer, species such as Common Pipistrelle, Natterer's and Daubenton's bats become more active. Keep an eye out near parks, rivers, and gardens just after sunset, and watch for quick, darting movements against the sky.

Active tree creeper nest spotted!📣 On last Saturday’s summer guided walk, the group spotted this tree creeper bringing food to its chicks. The nest is tucked away inside a dead branch, highlighting the importance of leaving dead, old, and fallen branches throughout the woodland 🍃 📸: Mark Albini

In our wildflower meadow, you may spot some of these little mounds... they're ant hills! If you look closely, you'll find that these ant hills have holes and divots in them. These are made by green woodpeckers, which land and peck into the hills to feed on the ants! 🐜🌻

📣Spring guided walk at Highate Wood happening tomorrow at 11am (May 2) The wood is looking beautiful in the spring sunshine, and the honey bees are loving it. Flowers are blooming everywhere you look, and the sound of the birds and insects is incredible!💚

Today is Earth Day 🌍🍃 A time to celebrate and reflect on the amazing green space we have in London, and how we can protect the wildlife that we live alongside 🐍🐸🦉 Thank you for being a part of Highgate Wood's community and helping protect our corner of the natural world 🐞

These brilliant videos were taken on our guided walk - Birds & Their Song - that happened last Saturday 🐦🌟 Those who joined us spotted nest building behaviours, such as this nuthatch adding mud to the entrance of its bird box! 📸 credit: Mark Albini

Swipe to see why we close in high winds ➡️ Earlier this week, we closed due to strong winds and these are just some of the photos taken the day after, of two hornbeams and an oak tree that had unfortunately come down. Hopefully with summer around the corner, we'll be in for brighter, calmer days ☀️

Today is the spring equinox, marking the start of longer, warmer days ☀️ As winter winds down and we prepare for summer, our team have been out dead hedging and creating natural barriers in the wood 🍃 This creates safety zones around veteran trees, and protects undergrowth and roots💚
