Had a brilliant day out here today. Did some printing, ate some cake, saw a tiny almanac from the 1760s and had lovely chats with several people. . We also came up with the hypothesis that having a strong internal monologue is related to anxiety (I have neither).

2/2 Margaret joined the Artists’ Franchise League and designed posters for the WSPU. She was arrested in 1912 and fined for advertising a suffrage meeting by chalking on the pavement in Norwood Road, Herne Hill. Should have stayed in the borough of Camberwell! She died aged 45 in 1932.
1/2 B1887 Margaret Bartels illustrator & suffragist lived at 23 Acacia Grove, Dulwich for c25 yrs with her widowed suffragist mother Marion. Margaret & sister Olive joined WSPU in 1909, the same year she enrolled at Camberwell School of Art, having won two design competitions for 'The Gentlewoman’
2/2 After she was widowed in 1895, she lived with various of her 8 children and grand children including a house in Dulwich Road, Herne Hill. She died aged 94 in 1931 and buried with Robert in Lambeth Cemetery.
1/2 My G-G-Grandmother Maria Aylmer (nee Raven) b1837. Married pattern maker Robert 1859, they lived in his workshop a few minutes from current site of London Eye, later living in other addresses in Lambeth.
Joan Clarke grew up at 193 Rosendale Road, West Dulwich and attended Dulwich High School for Girls. A blue plaque was installed at her childhood home in 2024.

This Grade II listed building is famous for being the only surviving 19th-century concrete house in England. Built in 1873 by Charles Drake of the Patent Concrete Building Company, using mass concrete construction. #HistoryMatters

ah yes, so much smaller population than Camberwell and Peckham had - and population rose so quickly from the latter 1700s right through the 1800s
within the Georgian era, what sort of size was Dulwich ? would it have been town or village sized, lying just on the edge of London ?
