The last day of life as I knew it began with a thunderstorm.

The rain slammed the pavement in sheets, creating a dark, slick look that reminded me of spilled oil. It drummed against the windows, a fuzzy background static that blended well with the sickly gray tint of the sky. It was mid-day but it looked like dusk, and on the one hand I was never happier to be in a dry, warm car.

On the other hand, I had never hated my job more as I stared through the rain at the skyscraper looming ahead.
