The Ebola outbreak in the DRC has officially become the largest recorded in the country's history, with 3,532 confirmed cases and 1,556 deaths. It is now the second-largest Ebola outbreak ever recorded, behind only the West Africa outbreak which infected over 28,000 people.

Very worrying. DRC just reported 125 new confirmed Ebola cases in a single 24 hour period, right after passing 100 daily cases for the first time yesterday. The outbreak is accelerating, not just driven by more testing: 50% of all tests in Ituri were positive.

The DRC reports 97 new confirmed Ebola cases, the highest single day total of the outbreak so far. An additional 62 deaths were recorded, mostly in the community, indicating that unmonitored transmission chains are spreading unchecked.

Per the latest DRC SITREP, three new health zones in Haut Uele have confirmed 14 Ebola cases and 13 deaths, including a case in the capital city of Isiro. 😬 This extreme fatality rate suggests massive underreporting and is very bad news for nearby South Sudan.

Local veterinarians are warning pet owners to take extra precautions as a particularly contagious strain of bird flu spreads across the country. Cats in particular are at risk of contracting the virus, according to veterinarians at Mount Laurel Animal Hospital in New Jersey.

The Iowa Department of Agriculture and is advising I pet owners to keep their cats and dogs away from sick or deceased wild birds and animals. Pet owners should also discourage indoor/outdoor cats from hunting wildlife because of the ongoing threat posed by H5N1 bird flu.

CDC issued a health advisory in response to the ongoing human infections with H5N1 bird flu and high levels of seasonal flu. "For hospitalized patients testing positive for influenza type A, faster testing to identify the influenza A virus subtype is recommended."
