ICE has now spent over $2.2 BILLION on purchasing 4 private prisons from CoreCivic, with the company banking half a billion dollars on the most recent sale. Of course, ICE will not actually operate these facilities; CoreCivic keeps the contracts to run these places for the foreseeable future.

Follows Sales of Two Detention Facilities in California
BRENTWOOD, Tenn., Aug. 05, 2026 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- CoreCivic, Inc. (NYSE: CXW) (CoreCivic or the Company) announced today that it has completed the sales of its 1,600-bed Prairie Correctional Facility in Appleton, Minnesota and its 1,033-bed Midwest Regional Reception Center in Leavenworth, Kansas to the United States of America and its assigns, by and through the Department of Homeland Security for an aggregate gross sales price of $734.0 million, including $495.6 million for the Prairie Correctional Facility and $238.4 million for the Midwest Regional Reception Center. These purpose-built facilities were specifically designed to care for individuals in a secure environment. After federal and state income taxes of approximately $182.2 million and transaction costs, the Company anticipates its net proceeds from these asset sales to be approximately $522.5 million. The Company currently expects to use the net proceeds for general corporate purposes, which may include debt reduction and the repurchase of the Company's common stock.

I can only speak for myself and I'm biased (as someone whose primarily interest is ecology and habitat conservation first) but my entire academic job at the moment is writing analysis code and developing software tools for data analysis and I definitely think the harms outweigh the time saved

just as developers should not make false equivalencies and claim positive impacts of AI justify or outweigh all harms, those of us not using the coding tools or benefitting otherwise should not overlook how much they can help.

Elon Musk has weaponized his stocks $tsla and $spcx, by convincing people (mostly young impressionable men) that they can get rich by buying his company stocks. In return, these people are incentivized to look the other way when Elon does horrible things, becoming unrelenting apologists for Elon.

The proposed deal now under discussion would give Iran a 5-7% toll for traffic through Hormuz, making the war a massive victory for the Iranians and insuring them a long-term dominant position in the Gulf. It would reflect pretty much an unconditional surrender by Trump to Tehran.
