The WIP Snip Word of the Day is 'carrier' - the following is an excerpt from my novel WIP Canary featuring the word of the day. Minor CW for implied past legal gaslighting and the shame of reporting an assault - Back inside the office, I started to feel hot with regret. I could leave. Or maybe not. Maybe running with my bag to the door would get me tackled. I could call another time. I could email. Hell, I could send a carrier pigeon. Anything would be easier. My head swam in a storm of memory, of the last time I had tried reporting when a man but his hands on me. The desperate sobs of shame, the anger of being mocked, and the fear of being called a liar swam around me like sharks, hungry for my terror.

"Katie," Detective Deer's voice came, opening the door to her office just as my body had settled in the chair. The sudden sound almost made me leap back out of it in shock. "It's nice to see you again. Officer Petty said you, uh, may have more to add to the case."

The WIP Snip word of the day is 'box' - the following is a long excerpt from my novel WIP Canary - Honestly, I felt horrendously for Emily. I would be absolutely humiliated to find out these things third hand. Yet again, Bekah was refusing to be honest. If things really had started to fall apart, she needed to be forthright. While she was a nag and an endless chatterbox, Emily didn't deserve to be embarrassed like that. Though, she wouldn't let me show her an ounce of empathy. She wanted to believe that she alone had only ever suffered such a slight.

"I wasn't going to the formal," Bekah sighed, shoving her hands into her jean pockets. "But Logan bought tickets and there's no refunds. What was I going to do, Em? Embarrass my boyfriend?"

"You've been embarrassing me," she wailed, a tear running down her cheeks as the tension burned its way up until the tops of her ears were red as a rose. "I thought you were my best friend."

"Seems like you want me to treat you like something else," Bekah shot back, voice still level and cool as ever.

"Girl," I snorted, gesturing to my outfit. Sloppy jeans ripped at the heels, ratty hoodie fresh off the box store clearance rack, a t shirt with an anime character edited on lightning and neon letters. I was a loser. I knew that. I was fine with that. "This is not the face you invite to a sick ass party. I look like I'm going to ask about the DD. Like, come on. I look ready to call a noise complaint."

We cracked up in the safety of her room. It was fine. I hated crowds, I didn't drink, and I wasn't about to smoke laced bud from an ass bag footballer. The movies made teen parties look tons of fun, but I knew it was something I only enjoyed from the sidelines. I was too much of an obedient homebody to get a thrill out of streaking and beer pong.

The Sunday Snips word of the day is 'pool' - the following is an excerpt from my novel WIP Canary featuring that word - Down the hall, a tiny oasis occupied a courtyard barely bigger than my own bedroom. The canopy of a well tended Japanese maple shielded a lichen softened bench, a single pond pool in the corner. The brick ground was insulated by bubbling swells of moss, a constant in the humid Southern air. When teachers came to sweep peace from the halls ahead of their students, they fiercely defended the small courtyard as if student use of facilities was criminal. In the early hours of the morning, I savored the sight from the windows. All the adjacent windows were still dark, a sign of mercy.

The WIP Snip word of the day is 'thorn' - the following is an excerpt from my novel WIP Canary featuring the word of the day - At her core, my mother was a deeply spiritual woman entangled in the thorny binds of religious fundamentalism. She nagged me to listen to my gut, that my body had more minds than the thinking one. I’d listened to her, but she stopped listening to me, so I stopped trusting my gut. Then, I started getting stuck in my head, frozen with indecision. Fighting back against that impulse, I told myself that obsessing over if Emily hated me or not was just pointless. Besides, we didn’t have a ton in common. It didn’t matter at the end of the day.

The WIP Snip Word of the Day is 'coherent' - this one was tricky for me since I haven't used that word in my current WIP. Instead, I chose the word 'understanding' - the following is an excerpt from my novel WIP Canary - Once they’d disappeared, Bekah’s cool girl persona melted away with a groan. She lifted her head from off the back of the booth to flash me a toothy grin of understanding. I shook my head, a smile peeling across my face. I felt for Emily, but I also understood that desperation only got you so far. Eventually, the display became pathetic. Clearly, Bekah had reached her patience point.

“I’ve told her no probably… twenty times?”

“Twenty?” I guffawed in disbelief, covering my mouth as a laugh took over my body.

“Since middle school.”

Eyes wrenching, I couldn’t help myself from cringing. I had thought that this was a new thing for Emily. I hadn’t been close with her in middle school and we had no common classes. I didn’t know what the norm was for her, but the idea of persistent obsession that lasted that long was sad to me. Surely, there was a willing participant that she was equally attracted to who could satisfy her need to experiment.

I spent so many years miserable pathetic, eager for any connection because I had none, that I came off the very same way. Yet, there I sat against the curb, thinking the same bitter shit I swore was the sign of an evil person. My humanity was my shame. I know this movie wasn't big for a lot of people and it gets a lot of flack in the scifi world, but I truly feel District 9 is one of the most underrated films about human-alien experiences and how humans would absolutely integrate the alien species into modern frames of oppression such as apartheid

The WIP Snip word of the day is 'relax' - the following is an excerpt from my novel WIP Canary - Logan raised an arm, ready to teach me a lesson, when a burly fist wrapped around his wrist. Behind him, one of the AP teachers who did football coaching on the side had immediately moved to restrain him. While I wasn't close to the staggering man, I was grateful in that moment that he knew how to properly restrain someone. Logan bucked against the grip as another male teacher raced down the steps and came in for an assist, throwing him up against one of the lockers with half the fury he'd thrown me.

"Relax!" The AP teacher barked, pushing his body weight into the teen boy underneath his grip. "Enough, Logan. It's done."

The WIP Snip word of the day is 'century' - the following is an excerpt from my novel WIP Canary featuring the word of the day - The ‘man’ she was referring to was my brother’s father, but only in the legal sense. He was a rat of a man, a gutter creature that had stuffed his monstrous personality into a suit long enough to fool my mother into thinking he was the wealthy man from her dreams. She would learn quickly that he was, in reality, a violent and unstable man. Methamphetamines, beer, and designer brands: without time period cues, it would be easy to assume Cameron’s father was a midcentury German soldier.

For years, he tortured our home with his erratic and violent ways. Yet, despite a record that spanned the country and several warrants out for his arrest, his rodeo clown like personality always sold his shit filled mouth like it dripped in gold. Too many of his victims found out too late that he was a bastard and a fool. He had a taste for multiple wives–read, sources of income–and vulnerable young girls.

The enemy is suspicion, codependency, and fear of change. However, one of my main characters is a secret villain. Their fear of people leaving and others outshining them drives them to dangerous limits. The other characters, frighteningly, are none the wiser - which is part of the drama. #WriteSky
