Cleveland State officially made a late addition to its 2026-27 roster on Thursday: 5-5 guard Annika Corcoran, a Chardon, OH native who made her collegiate debut with Detroit Mercy all the way back in 2019. Kyle Rossi has more.
Chardon Native Corcoran Set to Finish Career at CSU
Cleveland State made one more addition to its 2026-27 roster on Thursday, guard Annika Corcoran, who will offer the Vikings’ backcourt plenty of valuable experience in her final season of eligibility, along with an ability to facilitate offense. The Chardon, OH native, who played at Gilmour Academy before beginning her collegiate career, becomes the third Vikings player from Ohio, alongside Macie Taylor and Alexa Hocevar. Two of the three, Corcoran and Hocevar, are from the Cleveland area. Corcoran has been with the team throughout summer workouts, making Thursday’s announcement more a formality than a surprise.

Road Trip Brainstorm Leads to White’s CSU Return
Back on April 17th, Bob Dunn, Shelby Zoeckler, and Carolyn Wochele headed down to the Cincinnati area for one of the numerous AAU showcases that dominate the schedules of college basketball coaches during the spring and summer. If the trio felt a little lost, even on an extremely familiar route down I-71 – Cincy is a staple of the recruiting circuits, and Cleveland State plays a conference game at Northern Kentucky every year, of course – they could hardly be blamed. After all, Dunn had officially been hired to coach the Vikings less than one week earlier, and was only two days removed from his introductory press conference.

I learned virtually nothing from last year. Predictions at the time of year are, admittedly, a complete waste of time, since there’s no telling how things will actually shake out. Then again, this is true even when preseason predictions come out at a much more reasonable timeframe. But I’m going to give it another shot anyway, because what else am I doing right now? Bob Dunn's first non-conference schedule as Cleveland State's head coach should seem pretty familiar to Vikings fans, as it retains most of the familiar beats of recent slates, while tinkering in certain corners. For one thing, there's the customary early visit to a power conference school, with Big East opponent Xavier standing as CSU's likely next chance at a high-profile victory, on November 16th. The Musketeers have just two winning seasons since officially joining the big time in 2013, but made measurable strides in Billi Chambers’ third season at the helm, including XU’s first double-digit victory total since 2018-19.

Portal Withdrawals Boost Vikings’ Unexpected Continuity
When stepping into a practice during Cleveland State’s second week of summer workouts, it’s impossible to avoid being overwhelmed by a flood of familiarity. The waves, quite literally, crashed all around the Wolstein Center’s auxiliary gymnasium. Bob Dunn, a man in his fourth total season at CSU – though his first as the team’s head man – ran the proceedings, while two 2025-26 assistant coaches, Shelby Zoeckler and Carolyn Wochele, reprised their roles nearby. Another assistant, Mariah White, is new to the staff, but certainly not to the university, as she was a Vikings star between 2017 and 2021.

College sports can be a disillusioning mess for people who don't enjoy the same freedom of movement as players and coaches. But on the other side of the now-annual spring chaos, Kyle Rossi found comfort in the number of familiar faces who have recently re-connected with Cleveland State's program.
That Strange, Familiar Feeling
Earlier this month, as I sucked back the last inch of a cookies and cream milkshake at Cleveland State’s meet-and-greet for season ticket holders, I engaged in a “how’s your summer been going” conversation with assistant coach Shelby Zoeckler, who has been with the Vikings women’s program in various capacities for a decade. This is all very, very strange, I thought. How strange? Some context is in order. Back in April, about when I was sorting through CSU coaching rumors ranging from Mark Stephens to Kate Peterson Abiad, while six of the seven Vikings with remaining eligibility sat in the transfer portal, I decided to participate in one of the countless social media conversations about The State of Things.
