The valine enantiomearrings have gotten Valentine's-ier. Still some tweaks to make; but they cause me joy, so all further revisions are trivial.

A pair of plastic earrings modeling D-valine and L-valine. It is the same pair as in the previous photo, except with different colors: carbon atoms are light pink, and nitrogen atoms are lavender. Oxygen and hydrogen are the same colors as in the previous picture (red and white).

This is one of the most beautiful cross sections of cilia I've ever seen in our data, found by @csigulinsky.bsky.social. It is perfectly perpendicular to the plane of imaging which brings up an important point ~ connectomics. You gotta have enough resolution to see the important things. 2nm/px FTW!

'Purple' for #ArtRepostJuly 🐡 today--this one was easy. I looooove the textures you can get from NMR structures!

This is another one where I still don't have pictures that do it justice (RNA-binding zinc fingers deserve the world!), but I just fell in love with some of the textures here. Oops. www.rcsb.org/structure/6wlh

Four ribbon diagrams of the same thing, at different angles and scales: A chunk of RNA, twisted into a loop, with a chunk of protein bound to it. Multiple conformers are overlaid, so in some places the lines are thick and in some places they're a sprawled-out collection of chaotic wisps.

‘Realistic’ for #ArtRepostJuly 🐡. It may not be the most realistic thing ever, but I’m so proud of how this spaghetti with Met-balls turned out! (Get it? Because the meatballs are ribosomes and methionine is the main start codon? Ha…ha?) I finally have enough scrap PVA to make a few more...hmm....

'Surreal' is today's #ArtRepostJuly 🐡 prompt, and I don't really post much surreal stuff. So here are some pictures from the old place, inspired loosely by surrealist-adjacent Duchamp.

Duchamp's 1912 painting Nude Descending a Staircase (No. 2). A figure, painted in shades of gold, walks down a staircase; but the figure is shown at several points in time, so all the different versions of the figure overlap in the coolest ways. The other pictures feature an amino acid (gold/yellow/white tyrosine in the first two protein pictures, green phenylalanine in the last picture) that has been visualized at angles/in a style that is kind of reminiscent of that painting. The pictures are of PDB ID 7L8V, 1A66, and 7LNS, respectively.

'Blue' for today's #ArtRepostJuly prompt. Blue glowball! Glowbluall! 🐡

I didn't think these colors would go together well; I felt pretty silly starting this print, but I was in a hurry and prototyping is prototyping--I'm so glad to be wrong!! It's a #3dThursday miracle! (www.rcsb.org/3d-view/6JJD/1)

Half of a glowball, about 2" in diameter and backlit in the dark. It is a model of a virus-like particle from a nodavirus that causes white tail disease in prawns. It is printed in three colors: a greenish star/pentamer (of which there are 6 visible in the picture); translucent ice blue blades that jut out from each green pentamer to form five-pointed stars, and light blue everywhere else. It is pretty.
