wip wsaturday. uh. listen. I can explain,

The letter, now fully deciphered, lies before him.
Once folded crisply into thirds, Hubert had read and re-read the missive so many times that now lay quite flat.
The letter had arrived from beyond the sea, in Dagda. Its author was there, conducting a surveillance mission, and was due to arrive home within the week. The nature of the mission was of critical importance; a new branch of their spy network was to be planted in Dagsion, intermingling with the merchants and the sellswords. There were already a handful of seasoned Order members there, and whispers of a succession crisis in Dagda's capital had reached their ears. The opportunity to sink their talons deeper into Dagsion was too great to let slip, and there was only one person Hubert could trust to assess the situation unseen.
Such utility assuaged his longing for her, but only just so.

Bernadetta had sent several communications home to him in Varley, each written in their newly developed Vestra Cipher Seven. Hubert was getting better at more quickly untangling this latest web, but it had still taken him nearly triple the amount of time it ordinarily took him to read a non-coded letter.
The slower pace had made the contents all the more exciting.
He gestures, sealing the door to his study with an arcane lock. He glances about the room once, twice, and then seats himself, deliberately leaving space between his body and the edge of the desk. For a moment, Hubert debates lighting a candle, but he decides against it, eager to read her letter again.
"Dear Hubert,
Thank you very much for the new cape you had commissioned for me. I have received several compliments on it. I like it; I don't normally fancy myself the sort of woman who would be able to pull off this sort of aesthetic, but you made it work."
Hubert feels himself start to smile. Bernadetta was far more adept with the written word than the spoken.

"I wish I'd thought to wear it for you before I left home. I've found myself wondering how you'd have reacted to it, and whether it turned out how you imagined. Since you weren't here to see it happen, I thought I'd write and tell you."
Hubert's breath catches in his throat. He knows what is coming, and the anticipation tightens his body like a bowstring.
"I bloodied it today."
He sighs.
"I am sorry you missed it, but I know this'll be the first of many. I don't know if it'll ever measure up to your own, though... and I miss it. I miss how heavy it feels, how it wraps itself around me, and most of all, the way it smells."
