🧵The legend of the Slaithwaite "Moonrakers" captures the wit and rebellious spirit of West Yorkshire’s historic canal-weaving communities. Nestled in the rugged Colne Valley, 19th-century Slaithwaite (Slawit) relied on the Huddersfield Narrow Canal for trade and for smuggling

This painting is titled Slaithwaite Moonrakers, created in 1940 by the British artist Charles Reginald Napier. It depicts a local legend about smugglers who claimed to be "raking the moon" from a canal when caught by authorities. The artwork is currently part of the collection at the Kirklees Museums and Galleries Image: Slaithwaite Moonrakers, Charles Reginald Napier (1910–1989) Kirklees Museums and Galleries
