I have an MA in archaeology and run a blog called Living in the Longue Durée about ancient history and whatever else. This profile is mostly funny observations about history and science. Blog: https://livinginthelongueduree.com Ask if you want Discord.

Last night in the Jacob dream report, I was on the board of some national park and there was an Allosaurus who would hunt guests if they didn’t tip him. But then suddenly I was removed from my job and it was because the Allosaurus had been appointed head of the park and was engaging in corruption.

Y’all are so hard on George R. R. Martin for not finishing his books but we’ve been waiting on Thucydides to finish History of the Peloponnesian War since 411 BC. Fucker left such a cliffhanger it stops mid-sentence. Finish your damn story or suffer what you must, meek boy.

Friend invited me to a Discord voice channel and three separate groups of people were simultaneously playing different games in there all while another kid played loud pop music and sang to it while blasting sound effects from the soundboard. Aight, I’mma head out, guys, bye.

I can’t decide if I want to caption this about living on a world orbiting a red giant or referencing the Chinese political song “Red Sun in the Sky” but that wildfire smoke is making things look ominous. Happy Tuesday in the Anthropocene.

A picture out the back window of my parents’ deck and yard, featuring an umbrella table and chairs. The sky is shrouded by smoke, which is penetrated by a red circular Sun.

Today in the Jacob dream report, I dreamed that AIs were sort of like real-life Minecraft mobs in that they were hostile entities that appeared in the dark and wandered a little area and we all carried weapons to fight AIs in situations like… say… the night walk from the car to the house.

I am fully in the camp, by the way, with the idea that the Dutch Revolt, English Civil Wars, and Glorious Revolution constitute an early part of the process that includes the American Revolution and French Revolution. I think it’s useful to take this long view on the origins of Atlantic liberalism.

Was reading up on the Council of Trent, the 19th Catholic ecumenical council and central event of the Counter-Reformation with much doctrinal clarification. It started on my birthday, December 13, 1545, and ended on my sister’s birthday, December 4, 1563, so I told her in a cute sibling text.

Hot take on writing in historical settings but if you’re representing an ancient society where the existence of the supernatural is taken as a given, you are obligated to entertain this as reasonable as a narrator instead of imposing some weird presentist cultural-centrist materialism on everything.

The In-N-Out towers over the oppidum of the Oregonii, symbolizing our subjugation. The Revolt of Burgerville has failed. The Imperium Californicum is here. I enter the colonia and go to that monumental thermopolium on the cardo. “Ave Imperator Neusomus,” I say, ordering the double-double.

I have to admit that I think that a lot of you who think you know the “real me” don’t really. Actually I’m characterized by the mark of anatta and I lack an eternal unchanging essence. I am a transitory and emergent being affected by the skhandas, homies.

The Ya’qubi command theory of morality is the philosophical concept where if you asked me if something is OK and I would say back “yeah, I think that’s fine” or similar, then that is a moral thing to do.

Guy I knew at work said he had a date and while they were eating chicken, his date told him chickens are descended from dinosaurs and then he couldn’t finish the chicken. He asked me if this was true. Yeah, bro, they’re dinosaurs. I’m sorry it ruined your date I guess.

1978: “Damn, I need a new and clever name for my department store and clothing brand.” “Sorry, off-topic, but I’ve just been thinking it’s wild how the US keeps pushing Central American countries to be dependent on exports to US industries… banana republics.” “I have an idea.”

A lot of pop-history spaces contrast the Aztec and Inca empires as like the aggressive oppressors vs. chill mountain kingdom respectively but honestly this generalization feels so backwards considering how much more population engineering and planned colonization happened under Tawantinsuyu.

Every time I walk in on a Gutfeld! segment, he’s making fun of fat people. This keeps happening. People are like “wow, conservative comedians are so brave and say things nobody is allowed to” and then it’s just “haha, they need Ozempic because they don’t work out and eat garbage. This is a joke.”

If you saw the first version of this post before I deleted it to avoid spreading misinformation and was wondering about the use of gourds in the Preceramic Andes, I am too. I know they did and I know bottle gourds got to the Precolumbian Americas, but I need to read more if Caral had bottle gourds.

Odysseus if he actually lived in the late phase of the Caral-Supe civilization of Peru around 1800 BC and saw a pottery vessel being used for the first time in his life: “Our Period of Preceramic is collapsing.”

Trying to flirt with someone whose primary interest is the archaeology of the Eastern Woodlands of North America between 100 BC and 500 AD must be like… “Call me Hopewell the way I wanna be buried in those mounds.”

“Spain is becoming an Islamic country.” Bro, that was 1,315 years ago. Your great Arian Christian Kingdom of the Visigoths is gone. I thought you should have been aware of that by now. Umayyad, bro?

I think it was… 2020 or so that I was last listening to podcasts but I liked Mike Duncan’s History of Rome so the whims have decided that I am listening to Revolutions now. If I start hyperfixating on the English Civil War, that’s why.
