The Trump admin continues to send immigrant students to remote detention centers in Louisiana. So I spent a day in court inside the ICE center holding Mahmoud Khalil. It has faced consistent allegations of medical neglect & due process issues. Here’s what I saw: www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025...

JD Vance miscalculated in that he thinks Europeans are even 1% receptive to being told what to do by Americans - which is pretty lol. Thanks for the push in the opposite direction, JD

To answer questions about pitching: I only take US-related pieces. So unless your subject is related to the US, it's probably going to be a no (sorry!) (but we have plenty of editors worldwide!)

I just finished HUM by Helen Phillips, in which AI robots interact with humans and pepper their conversation with ads. ('You look pale today. Would you be interested in our new popular new anti-ageing cream, Jessica?'). Can't stop thinking about it: it really is our future 🤑

How many *good* personal essays do you think a writer have in them a year? I often think some writers would benefit from pausing and ask themselves: am i writing about a truly extraordinary event, and if not, it it balanced by the quality of my writing? If not, should I let this one go?

Looking for: researched pitches for long form narratives [an arc! a story! characters! intrigue!]; essays [searing, searching, funny]; stories about gray areas and hard choices; people that give us hope; a sense of place.

San Diego: you have the best cab / ride share drivers I’ve ever had in the US. Cheerful, talkative - over 6 rides we talked politics, stock options, Japanese video games, working on the other side of the border, parenting - truly A+ and they all love their city 🤙🏻

Well folks, it happened. After a really bad storm this summer and multiple power outages, we're finally .... putting a go bag together. Can't wait to use my hand-cranked radio and mini-lanterns. Also never thought I'd be that person.

This is ridiculous coming from the Washington Post and will further entrench their journalism in a tiny political bubble. Also, they will lose talent. Such a shame to see such roll backs on that scale.

Hate this for many reasons—namely because working from home or at least having some flexibility is the only thing that makes this work sustainable for so many people, and it’s yet another great loss to journalism to push people doing meaningful work out over whether or not they sit in the office.
