It’s been a week since my mum passed. Still hurting. Grateful for the support of others near and far. Every day I’ve been watching the sun rise, thinking of her, and then toasting her with a dram of scotch each evening.

Visiting my childhood home to do some paperwork. If you asked me why I ended up as a marine scientist, this was a pretty strong influence. I learned to dive here, used to spend days exploring, and walked a thousand times through the national park nearby. #noosa

Heading home today from Australia. Mums in aged care. This morning she has another UTI, which is happening every 10 days or so. It is caused by poor hydration, she says she drinks a lot of water but in reality drinks not much at all (growing up I didn’t either). I had a word to the care staff

Moving my mum into aged care/nursing home tomorrow, direct from hospital. Any advice on what to do, bring, or prepare? Of all things it’s the name labeling her clothes that seems to be having the most impact on me emotionally.

I’ve been stuck in Australia for 3 weeks trying to arrange aged care for my mum, who fell and suddenly needs it. For a country that prides itself of free health care, free education, gosh this place is the pits for looking after seniors. Almost no aged care beds, huge demand from an aging population

I concur with the authors of this piece. There are many unanswered questions from the Prentice et al. paper last year on sea star wasting, and it is my opinion that there is insufficient evidence to say that sea star wasting is caused by Vibrio pectenicida FHCF-3. www.nature.com/articles/s41...

Day 3 of our April NSF Diadema time series! Today we went to one of our sites which was affected by a recurrence in January. Definitely a size shift in urchins towards smaller ones. This afternoon observed at a new site on the south of the island where sadly there were some infected individuals!

Day two of our expedition working with collaborators at the University of the Virgin Islands. Started the day with our experiment and then hit 2 sites to figure out where diadema occur on this island. Amazing viz, and importantly a lot of diadema (mostly mid sized, some large).

Day one of our NSF Diadema April time series project on St Thomas USVI. An experiment is up and running; lots of good diadema out there, and plenty of weird algae, including a bloom of dinos I think is Karlodinium polykrikoides adjacent to our site. Also Lyngbya (benthic cyano).

5/ Awardee @heatherfeaga.bsky.social is investigating how bacteria decide when to go dormant💤 (ie, form spores). After 2.5 weeks held up in Los Angeles by F*dex, pleased to say that they’re on their way again after a 30 min phone call to the company to reiterate everything I’ve been saying for the last couple of weeks (not plants, animals). Explanation given: “it’s now coded”. Grrr
