Do World Cups reveal which nations are thriving? Andrew Bertoli writes that sporting success can reflect wealth, opportunity, and strong institutions. It can also reflect luck, or governments using athletic achievement to project national strength. www.ie.edu/insights/art... @iepolisci.bsky.social

I recently published findings from a data collection in the Kasai (DRC), after the Kamwina Nsapu conflict 2016-2019. Many Kasai communities faced violence, displacement, food insecurity and fragile livelihoods. Check out this thread to learn more about how they navigated supporting each other.

Congratulations to our faculty member @swebera.bsky.social on a string of four recent publications reporting results of an impressive data collection effort in Kasai, Congo (coauthored with Peter van der Windt and Nik Stoop). Here is a thread on their work:

My department, @iepolisci.bsky.social has three TT lines in CP, IR, and PE to start in Fall 2027. I'm on the search committee and happy to answer any questions about the lines, the department, the university, or Madrid (spoiler alert: they're awesome).

Our department has three calls for tenure track positions. IE is a fast growing group of scholars doing top-notch work, which offers very attractive conditions in a great European city. If you are looking for an academic job in Europe, definitely do consider applying.

Congratulations to our HoD @catherinedevries.bsky.social on her publication in @cpsjournal.bsky.social! Studying the UK, they find that while a majority express support for fiscal consolidation in principle, only a minority prioritize it when facing trade-offs. journals.sagepub.com/eprint/RTJFW...

Whilst embarking on a big writing project, many of us think about routines to achieve our goal. Wake up earlier. Block our phone. Write 1 hour everyday, etc. But what if long projects stall not because of a lack of routine, but a lack of clarity about why we write? New post: shorturl.at/hbh1g 🧵

I also feel extremely thankful to be part of the special issue that this paper introduces. Because of that I got to discuss these topics with some of the scholars I most admire. I can’t overstate how much I learned from those discussions.

The article is the introduction to a forthcoming special issue of Comparative Political Studies titled “Back from the Brink: Countering Illiberalism in Liberal Democracies,” which I co-edited with @isabelamares.bsky.social and which features great contributions. Out soon! 7/7
