Classical ethopoeia is an ancient rhetorical exercise and technique of character impersonation where a speaker or writer steps into the persona of another person to express their thoughts, feelings, and style.

Piter placed the paper on table and walked to the door. “Judge Uller. Maybe you should go to bed already? The papers can wait, and you have early duties in the morning. The butcher of Manck case starts.” Uller nodded and felt the #lure of sleep. “I will, Piter, later.” #vss365

“Piter. Bring some of the unofficial material next. I do not think I can find out more from the official versions. The charge was abandoning the duty and causing the death of superiors and troopers is so well polished that it could be used as a #lure and fish with.” #vss365

Uller stared at the name and felt something stirring in the back of his mind, something he thought he grew out of years ago. The #lure of righteousness as Judge Morris called it was the bane of a proper judge. He could recall lectures about it, long and harsh lectures. #vss365

Neo-classical stylization in prose is a writing approach from the 17th and 18th centuries that prioritizes reason, order, clarity, and balanced sentence structures over heavy emotion or ornate decoration.

An objective correlative is a specific set of objects, a situation, or a chain of events that serves as a formula to evoke a particular emotion in an audience without directly naming it.

“Who were they? His friends? I would not try to drag just someone down a #mountain. Armour is heavy.” Piter fanned himself with a paper and there was tapping on the window as rain started. Uller flipped the pages and stopped on a line. “Francis Hugh the Younger.” #vss365

“Why did he drag those two down?” Piter placed another stack of documents on the reading table. It was a veritable #mountain of information by now, and it was only documents from the official library. “I do not know. Perhaps he thought they could be saved?” #vss365

Uller shook his head as he tried to imagine it happening. The young Rook dragging two knights, in armour down a #mountain. According to the report, he dragged them for a short ride. Over the rocks while wounded and then coming to camp and being put into the irons. #vss365

“Listen to this Piter. The #mountain assault of Gregorian Fortress Panum has stalled. There is not enough paths to travel. Earlier today I was inspecting the progress and saw a young lieutenant dragging with him two bodies from higher slopes. Both pierced with arrows.” #vss365

Uller looked at the #clouds rolling from the south. Air smelled of rain and few stray seagulls were still calling each other somewhere. “Everything. Bring me everything. My mentor Judge Morris always said that to know something, read all the records and extrapolate.” #vss365

“Go fetch me all the documents we have about Lieutenant Rook. His treatment is #clouding my mind and I want to see if there is a valid reasoning for it.” Uller walked to the window and opened it. Piter did not move. “Official or the other stuff too?” #vss365

The light was dying and Uller walked to the rope holding the lanterns. He left the loop into the hook and watched as Piter was lighting each of them. Small and dark #clouds rose from the wicks as the fire fought the moisture, but soon the room was lit. #vss365

Uller stared at the floorboards and the smoothness on where judges over generations had shuffled over them. Sitting and reading on all hours. Making sure laws were upheld. He raised his eyes on the book which was a #bequest to him from Judge Morris. #vss365

“How much do you know of this Lieutenant Rook?” Uller touched his stomach and tried to decide if the feeling was hunger or something more. “As much as most. I have a long shot bet on him lasting five reprieves. Some bet on his #bequests, or lack of them.” #vss365

Uller frowned and tried to traverse the odd feeling filling him after hearing the words. The prisoner fought for the mitigations, and of course for their survival, but taking away the one #bequest they were offered did not sit well with Uller as laws should prevail. #vss365

“Do you know what mitigations he has been #bequested with so far?” Uller placed his book on the table and locked the chain to the links on the spine. He secreted the key under his clothes and took a seat. “None. Once again, Lord Hugh and his personality.” #vss365

“He is that Rook? I thought he would be younger, taller, bigger. Different.” The office was filled with rays of sun slowly settling down. “Yes. I hear that a lot. For some reason people like Lieutenant Rook have a reputation, maybe all the #reprieves built it up?” #vss365

“Who was that man. The one with black hair and dressed as a soldier?” Uller grabbed his book as he walked past his aide, Piter. “Soldier… Yes. He is a soldier. Lieutenant Rook. This is his third #reprieve, but he will not be released. Lord Hugh, well, you know him.” #vss365

Uller watched at the men, eyes almost sparkling as they realized they would not die today. A #reprieve would give them some days if they were skilled enough, but most would never return. Uller stood up and noticed a pair of eyes that were different. #vss365

”You are given a #reprieve, but how you act during this time will determine whether the final judgement will accept mitigation or not.” High judge Uller said and closed the book. The sound carried far and was echoed by other courts. #vss365
