Join our next Peace and Conflict Talk (#PaCT) on Wednesday 29 Oct 2025 at 3 pm (CEST) and listen to our guest speaker Dr Sandra Obradović on "The Political Life of Memory: Remembering, belonging and imagining different futures":

Text describing the topic of the online event: What happens to collective memories when nations undergo rapid political change? And how do these memories shape possibilities for managing conflict and building lasting peace? This talk traces the political life of collective memory across contexts and time, beginning with my foundational research in Serbia and extending to broader theoretical insights about memory, power, and conflict transformation. The talk develops a conceptual argument about collective memories as inherently relational and deeply political: they are shaped by asymmetrical power relations, they frame present-day intergroup dynamics, and they open or close pathways to political futures. I explore my own and wider research on how political leaders strategically manage collective memories to navigate the tension between maintaining identity continuity and enabling necessary change and consider how collective memories become anchors for collective nostalgia, and its relationship with contemporary political attitudes. Finally, I consider how understanding these dynamics can inform conflict resolution practice – not by imposing external narratives, but by recognizing how communities use history as a resource for making sense of turbulent presents and contested futures. In the end, I argue that the question is not whether to engage with collective memory in peacebuilding, but how to do so in ways that acknowledge power, honour multiple perspectives, and create space for transformation. This talk is part of the Memory and Conflicts theme of PaCT series. The event will be held online.
