International Criminal Justice Day reminds us that no one is above the law. Independent judicial institutions play a vital role in ensuring accountability for the gravest crimes and in giving victims a path toward justice. LI remains committed to defending and strengthening the Rome Statute.

This week marks an important step following the ICJ landmark opinion on States’ obligations on Climate Change. A total of 141 States voted in favour of the UNGA follow-up resolution to advance implementation of the Court’s findings to address climate change

Join our Global Town Hall on Strengthening International Judicial Institutions tomorrow March 31st & April 1st about the ICJ, ICC (amendments), IACC, UNSC reform + more. Register for the Americas/Africa/Europe session on March 31st here: t.co/obvyCA8Z2q

Today, LIE marks the remembrance of the transatlantic slave trade and the immense suffering endured by enslaved Africans. We reaffirm our commitment to honour this shared history and to address the continuing legacy of this injustice.

The Commission on the Status of Women, #CSW70, is underway in New York City this week, and many of our colleagues, partners and youth leaders have been highlighting how we can break down barriers and help girls everywhere thrive.

“What concrete steps can Member States take to support the integrity, independence, and effective use of institutions such as the International Court of Justice and the International Criminal Court—particularly when the Security Council is unable to act?” - @rebeccaashoot.bsky.social

Last week at the #PrepCom for the crimes against humanity treaty, our Co-Convener Rebecca Shoot called on states to adopt a treaty that retains a gender-forward, victim-and survivor-centric architecture - and advocated for the addition of the slave trade to the treaty.

2/2 Today, LIE reaffirms its commitment to establish a convention promoting: - all atrocity crimes are at the same level - existing intl. criminal law and #ICC provisions - the role of the ICJ to settle disputes amongst states - the meaningful participation of civil society

1/2 LIE is proud to participate for the next two weeks in the historical preparatory committee on a convention on crimes against humanity. This convention will fill a legal gap on states’ responsibility to prevent and punish CaH - showing that no hierarchy exists between the most serious crimes
